MILWAUKEE - Lanette Rossini staked the Marquette women?s soccer team to a one-goal lead only 58 seconds into the game and the Golden Eagles controlled play the rest of the way, cruising to a 4-0 victory over Conference USA foe Tulane on a blustery evening at Valley Fields. Rossini added two assists and Katherine Ward netted two goals to help Marquette improve to 9-6-2 and 6-2-1 in C-USA. The Green Wave fell to 8-8-0, 1-7-0.
?Lanette?s goal set the tone early for us,? Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. ?We played with confidence and controlled play after that. It was good to be home again.?
After a six-game road swing, Marquette opened its regular-season closing, four-game homestand with a strong overall effort. Playing into the wind in the opening frame, the Golden Eagles still limited Tulane to only one shot in the opening frame. The Green Wave would only record two shots on the evening as keepers Mo Bothwell and Ashleigh Koenig registered Marquette?s sixth shutout of the season.
?It was an all-around good team effort,? Roeders said. ?We got everybody into the game, and everyone contributed something positive towards the win. We couldn?t ask for much more.?
Rossini?s game-winning goal before the first minute of action had elapsed came after Kelly Roethe picked off a Tulane clearing pass along the right wing and sent it to her classmate. After dribbling into the middle, Rossini launched a 25-yarder which floated over Tulane keeper Jaclyn Urso. It was Rossini?s sixth goal of the season.
The senior co-captain then assisted on the next two goals. After a ball was served into the box, Rossini got a foot on it during a scramble before Ward cleaned things up, sending in her fifth goal of the season off the crossbar. The third goal came after Kelly Roethe slide-kicked a deflected cross from Rossini into the back of the net in the 31st minute.
After the break, Marquette continued to dominate play, with a majority of the action taking place in front of the Tulane net. Roethe and Ward teamed up for the final score of the game. After receiving a pass from Roethe, Ward juked past one Green Wave defender before blasting a 10-yarder off Urso?s hands into the net.
Rossini?s goal ended an eight-game goal-scoring drought for the senior. She now has 16 points. Roethe increased her team scoring lead to 25 points, while Ward also improved to 18 points. The Golden Eagles have outscored their last two opponents 9-0.
Marquette is back in action at the Valley on Sun., Oct. 24, when they host Southern Miss in another C-USA match-up at 1 p.m.
