MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Head coach David Staniford?s Marquette University men?s tennis squad concluded a strong weekend by taking two singles and two doubles titles this morning at its own Marquette Fall Invitational. The weekend was highlighted by the #1 Singles Flight championship of senior Christophe Van Der Gucht.
Playing in only his second competition as a Golden Eagles, Van Der Gucht lost the first set of his opening round match yesterday but was on the winning end of the remainder of his sets in the competition to go 3-0 in winning the top flight?s title. The former foreign exchange student from Belgium defeated Eastern Illinois? Lukasz Pluta 7-5, 6-2 to secure the championship.
Senior leadership abounded for the Golden Eagles at their annual tournament, as Van Der Gucht?s classmate, Carlo Rossi, captured the #3 Singles Flight title with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Jean-Philipe Cloutier of Chicago State. Along with freshman Eric Vescuso, Rossi also took home the #3 Doubles Flight title. The Golden Eagles tandem dropped the UW-Green Bay team of Tom Heidenberger and Barry Hankel 8-4.
Marquette also won the #2 Doubles Flight, with the duo of Bart Cordemeyer and Justin Holson stopping Northern Iowa?s Ben Herbst and John Houghton 8-4.
The DePaul Blue Demons also had a big weekend, sweeping the remaining singles flights. Andy Michael (#2), Rory McKinney (#4), Dan Bennett (#5), Neil Johnston (#6) and David Pitsch (#7) each won all of their sets in taking their respective flights. The #1 Doubles team was Nick Bodmer and Karl Morgan from Illinois-Chicago.
