ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Marquette men?s soccer team managed only four shots on goal in suffering a 3-0 loss to Great Lakes Region foe Oakland at the Golden Grizzlies? OU Field this afternoon. Gunnar Halvorsen netted two goals and assisted on the third in helping Oakland improve to 10-3-2 overall. Marquette saw its record go to 9-6-0 with the loss.
?Oakland played tremendously well in the first half and we started extremely slowly,? Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. ?We couldn?t get into a flow and were disorganized for much of the half. And Oakland is a good team that played, on the day, better than several of the high-profile teams we?ve seen this year.?
Halvorsen supplied all the offense Oakland would need in the game?s 17th minute. The junior midfielder took a cross from Paul Snape and pushed it past Golden Eagle keeper Greg Guglielmino at the 16:56 mark for the game-winner. A midfield battle ensued over the remainder of the first half?s 28 minutes.
Marquette came out firing after the break and gained control of possession throughout the beginning of the second frame. Oakland?s defense held tight long enough, however, as the Golden Grizzlies broke through for the second goal of the game at the 73:48 mark. With Marquette pushing up to try to find the equalizer, the Golden Eagles were caught short-handed in their own box as Inge Pederson converted a Halvorsen cross for the insurance goal. Halvorsen capped off the scoring just moments later to finalize the 3-0 victory.
?We dominated for a majority of the second half but couldn?t finish,? Adlard said. ?We got caught with too many people up field on the second goal. The third goal was basically a result of a letdown after the second one.?
In between its one early and two late goals, Oakland relied on one of the nation?s stingiest defenses to keep control of the game, holding Marquette?s Marshall Morehead, Conference USA?s leading scorer, to no shots. The shutout was the tenth of the season for the Golden Grizzlies, who are ranked fifth in the nation in shutout percentage. The game marked the first time Marquette had been shutout since Sept. 6 against Washington at the Adidas Portland Invitational.
?I knew a game like this would be coming, because we?ve been starting slowly over the past few games,? Adlard said. ?So its good to get it out of the way, really.?
Marquette returns to Milwaukee for a home game at Valley Fields on Sat., Oct. 23. The Golden Eagles host Conference USA foe South Florida in a crucial league game at 7 p.m. (CT).
