Torrez-Horgøien Combo Lifts Maquette Past Northwestern

MILWAUKEE – Efficient. The Marquette University men's soccer team scored on three of its four shots Saturday afternoon en rout to defeating Northwestern, 3-1, at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles improved to 3-1-1 on the season with the victory.
Marquette opened the scoring in the 34th minute on its first shot attempt of the day when Mads Konrad Horgøien sliding effort finished a feed from Hudson Torrez for his third goal of the year. Despite being outshot 6-1 in the opening 45 minutes, that moment was the difference at the half.
The Golden Eagles doubled the advantage just 60 seconds into the second half. This time it was Torrez from Konrad Horgøien . After his shot on the break was blocked, the junior forward stuck with the rebound and slid it across the face of goal to Torrez waiting on the back post for a tap-in.
Northwestern pulled within a goal in the 61st minute on a tally from Italo Addimandi, but Marquette answered late in regulation. Minutes later, NU nearly leveled the game. A cross that left Andrew Millar wide open at the six forced Cameron Simpson to come up with a point-blank save with a his right arm extended.
With the Wildcats pressing, Gabe Watkins stepped in front of a clearance in the 83rd minute. Like a pinball, the ball came off Watkins into the path of Tomiwa Adewumi. The freshman took one dribble to his left, cut back to his right and went far post on the keeper to restore the two-goal cushion and close out the 3-1 victory.
Despite being outshot 13-4, Marquette made the most of its opportunities, placing three of its four attempts on target. Simpson made two saves as the Golden Eagles earned their third win of the season.
