MILWAUKEE, Wis. -
COMING UP THIS WEEK Coach Steve Adlard?s Marquette men?s soccer team (7-4-0, 3-1-0) looks to build on its school-record-tying seven-game winning streak with a pair of prominent games this week. On Wed., Oct. 6, the Golden Eagles shoot for win #8 at cross-state rival Wisconsin. Marquette and the Badgers are scheduled for a 7 p.m. (CT) kick-off. Marquette closes the week with a noon game at Conference USA foe UNC Charlotte on Sun., Oct. 10.
LAST WEEK The Golden Eagles tied the school record of seven consecutive wins with two home victories this past weekend. The Golden Eagles got their league-best third C-USA win on Fri., Oct. 1, with a 1-0 win over Memphis. Jeremiah Bass (Racine, Wis. / Prairie School) netted the first goal of his collegiate career for the game-winner. Marquette then knocked off #12 Creighton 1-0 at a swamped Valley Fields on Sun., Oct. 3. Marshall Morehead (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater Area) stunned the favored Bluejays with a 23-yard blast from just above the center of the box with only 1:27 left to make the Golden Eagles winners for the seventh straight game. Goalkeeper Greg Guglielmino (Mesa, Ariz. / Phoenix JC) came up big for the Golden Eagles in both weekend contests, making 11 saves and breaking up several other good scoring chances in the two games. For his effort, Guglielmino was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 3.
WISCONSIN AT A GLANCE Following a pair of losses this past weekend, head coach Kalekeni Mtalika Banda?s Badger squad is currently 4-7-1. Wisconsin fell to #12 Creighton 2-0 on Fri., Oct. 1, and to Ohio State 7-3 on Sun., Oct. 3, in those weekend outings. In his third season in Madison, Banda is 15-35-2 (.308) at the helm of the Badgers. His overall, 18-year career mark is 172-106-29 (.607). The Badgers are led by sophomore goalkeeper Moriba Atiba Baker, who is 4-5-1 with 40 saves and a 1.66 goals against average (GAA). The Badger offense is led by a pair of strikers, sophomore Leron Gabriel and freshman Aaron Lauber, who each sit atop the Badger scoring chart with four goals and eight points. Wisconsin leads the all-time series with Marquette 21-10-7, but the Golden Eagles are unbeaten in the last four meetings with a 2-0-2 mark. Marquette and Wisconsin tied 0-0 in Milwaukee a year ago.
UNC CHARLOTTE AT A GLANCE A perennial contender for the C-USA title and an NCAA Tournament bid, coach John Tart?s 49ers have struggled with the early-season C-USA schedule this year. UNCC is 0-3 in the league and 3-4 overall. The 49ers? most recent outing was a match at South Florida on Sun., Oct. 3, which was suspended because of lightning around the 65-minute mark with South Florida leading 2-1. In their most recent complete game, Louisville downed the 49ers 3-1 in Charlotte. UNC Charlotte is led by juniors John McDonough and C.J. Robinson. McDonough, a 6-4 keeper, is 3-2 with a shutout, 12 saves and a 1.56 GAA this season. Robinson was a Preseason All-C-USA selection at his defensive back slot. Sophomore Stephen Miller tops the 49er offense with seven goals and 14 points. Now in his fifth year at UNC Charlotte, Tart has a 56-30-7 (.640) with the 49ers. His 18-year overall mark is 193-122-28 (.603). UNC Charlotte leads the all-time series with Marquette 4-1 and took last year?s 3-1 decision in Charlotte.
HEAD COACH STEVE ADLARD After the upset win over Creighton on Sunday, Marquette?s Steve Adlard now has twice led the Golden Eagles to seven straight wins, the longest such streaks in the program?s history. He took his Golden Eagles to the C-USA semifinals for the third time in four seasons in 1998, when MU concluded the year with a 9-11-1 record . Now in his eighth season at the helm of the Golden Eagles, Adlard has compiled an 85-61-14 (.575) mark. He led MU to its first-ever NCAA Tournament and C-USA regular-season title in 1997. Adlard is second on the Marquette winning percentage list and has led the Golden Eagles to winning seasons in five of the last six seasons. With Marquette?s victory against UW-Milwaukee on Sept. 30, 1998, he moved into second on the MU career wins list. A former goalkeeper for the British universities national team, Adlard previously was the head coach at UNC Asheville and Davis & Elkins. He is a 1972 graduate of Loughborough University in Loughborough, England. Adlard has an overall record of 138-119-23 (.534) in 13 years. He is assisted by Bryan Mogford and Dan Holcomb.
IN THE POLLS The Golden Eagles climbed to #5 in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region ranking this week. In the remainder of the NSCAA Regional Rankings: Portland is #4 and Washington #7 in the Far West, Oakland, Cincinnati and UW-Milwaukee are #2, #4 and #9, respectively, in the Great Lakes, Saint Louis is #1, Creighton #3 and UMKC #7 in the Midwest, and UAB and South Florida are #9 and #10 (tied), respectively, in the South. Marquette is not ranked in any national polls this week, however several Golden Eagles? opponents did garner national recognition. C-USA rival Saint Louis is #3 in the NSCAA poll and #5 in Soccer America. Creighton dropped to #17 in the NSCAA poll and #19 in the Soccer America poll following the loss to Marquette. Portland jumped up to #14 in both polls, while Oakland made its debut at #21 in the NSCAA poll.
STREAKING Marquette?s current seven-game winning streak is its longest since the 1996 season, when the Golden Eagles won seven straight from Sept. 22-Oct. 11. The seven-game winning streaks are the best in the programs? 36-year history. MU?s longest win streak a year ago was four games, from Sept. 27-Oct. 9. Marquette?s longest unbeaten streak is 13 games, recorded between the 1984 and 1985 seasons.
HEADERS Despite the fact that his goal-scoring streak was snapped at six games against, Morehead again played the hero for Marquette. Last week?s C-USA Offensive Player of the Week netted the game-winning goal at the 88:33 mark against Creighton to lift the Golden Eagles to the 1-0 upset and their record-tying seventh straight win. The junior striker took a pass from Joe Gallo just above the box, dribbled from the left to the center and blasted a shot from 23 yards out. The shot got a lucky deflection off the thigh of a Bluejay defender just after Morehead let it fly and was never played on by the Creighton keeper, who was frozen after the deflection. Morehead leads Marquette and C-USA with 10 goals and 21 points.
G-MAN Following the victories over Memphis, Guglielmino is now 6-1-0 with four shutouts, 26 saves and a 1.06 GAA. He garnered the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week award after recording back-to-back shutouts of Memphis and Creighton. He stopped four shots against the Tigers and then made a Marquette career-high seven saves against a talented Creighton squad. His point-blank save of a Bluejay header late in the contest preserved what was then a 0-0 tie and may have saved the game for the Golden Eagles. He currently has a streak of 256 unscored-upon minutes.
BASS-O-MATIC Jeremiah Bass? first collegiate goal was a memorable one, serving as the game-winner against Memphis on Friday. Bass took a nifty layoff from Sean Reti, settled it and sent it towards the far post. The ball deflected in off a backtracking Tiger defender for the decisive goal. Bass was also one of the leaders of the Golden Eagle defense which shut down both Memphis and Creighton.
RETI FOR ACTION Sophomore Sean Reti (Brookfield, Wis. / East) extended his point-scoring streak to four games with an assist on Bass? game-winning goal versus Memphis. The speedy attacking midfielder took off down the right wing, cut back towards the middle past two Tiger defenders and layed the ball off to Bass, who settled it and sent it far post for the game-winner. Though his point-scoring streak was stopped against Creighton, he still warranted several Bluejay defenders? attention throughout the game and created several good scoring opportunities. Reti is second on the team with seven points on a goal and a team-high five assists.
AROUND THE NET Junior Joe Gallo (St. Louis, Mo. / SLUH) was more than effective in his first start of the season, getting his first point of the season with an assist on Morehead?s game-winning goal against Creighton ? junior Andy Hunter (Swaffham, England / Hamonds) returned from a bruised left foot suffered in the second half of the Louisville game to spearhead the Marquette defensive effort ? his running mate in the center midfield against Creighton was senior co-captain Ryan Taylor (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst), whose physical play in the rain-soaked Creighton contest was a valuable asset to the Golden Eagles.
C-USA LEADERS Marquette has several players ranked among the C-USA statistical leaders. Morehead leads the league with 21 points, and ten goals, and is second with 31 shots. Reti is tied for fourth with five assists and is tied for sixth with 21 shots. Jeremiah Bass is tied for seventh with three assists. Guglielmino is fourth with a 1.38 GAA, eighth with 26 saves and second with four shutouts.
Among the team leaders, Marquette is fourth with 48 points and 16 assists, and is fifth in goals (16) and shots (118). On the defensive side of the ball, the Golden Eagles are fifth with a 1.45 GAA, eighth with 33 saves and tied for second with four shutouts.
