Men's Soccer Upended By Cincinnati In C-USA Quarterfinals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Marquette men?s soccer team, reinvigorated this season after a disappointing 1998, concluded its season this evening with a 2-1 loss to Cincinnati in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament. The Golden Eagles end the season with 10-9-0 record, while sixth-seeded Cincinnati improves to 11-7-1 and advances to meet second-seeded Saint Louis tomorrow in a semifinal match.
?It?s just frustrating because we just didn?t have it tonight,? Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. ?We had some chances. We had some moments. We just couldn?t put everything together and it all came unraveled on their second goal.?
Marquette jumped out to an early lead when senior defender Ryan Taylor converted off a sequence with midfielders Mike Adrian and Bryan Godfrey to put the Golden eagles up 1-0. A sturdy Marquette defense allowed only three shots in the first half and Marquette took the one-goal lead into the break.
A hungry Bearcat squad applied early pressure after the intermission. At the 58:53 mark, Andrew Kean headed in a Johan Cedergren corner at the far post to tie the score at 1-1. Cincinnati took the lead for good in the 84th minute when striker Ryan Schreck got free in the box, beat MU keeper Greg Guglielmino to a loose ball and put home the game-winner.
?We?re frustrated right now, so its hard to see anything but the loss,? Adlard said. ?But we demonstrated with a relatively new team that we can play with anybody in the country this season. Their were some fine performances during the season. Marquette will be back among the nation?s elite programs over the next few seasons.?
