MILWAUKEE -
A LOOK BACK AT 1999 Coach Steve Adlard?s Marquette men?s soccer team (10-9-0, 5-3-0) rebounded from a disappointing 1998 and heightened expectations for the upcoming seasons with an impressive overall performance this fall. After dropping their first four decisions, the Golden Eagles reeled off an eight-game winning streak that was highlighted by a 1-0 upset of #12 Creighton. Marquette went 2-5 after the streak, but reached double-digits in wins and clinched third place in Conference USA with a 3-1 victory over South Florida on Oct. 23.
LAST WEEK AT THE C-USA TOURNAMENT The Golden Eagles were eliminated from the C-USA Tournament with a 2-1 quarterfinal loss to sixth-seeded Cincinnati on Thu., Nov. 11, in Birmingham, Ala.. Marquette took an early lead on senior back Ryan Taylor?s (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst) second goal of the season in the 14th minute. However, Marquette was unable to protect the lead, allowing two second-half scores and struggling to generate offense in the second half.
Regular-season co-champions UAB and Saint Louis advanced through to the championship game, in which the 22nd-ranked Blazers knocked off #4 Saint Louis 4-0 on Sun., Nov. 14. The Blazers thus earned the league?s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the Billikens earned an At-Large berth. UAB (15-5-0) hosts undefeated Southwest Missouri State (16-0-3) in Birmingham on Sun., Nov. 21, in an NCAA Tournament First Round Game. Saint Louis (16-3-2) hosts MCC champion Illinois-Chicago (17-3-0) in St. Louis, Mo., on Sat., Nov. 18, in its opening-round contest.
HEAD COACH STEVE ADLARD When Marquette defeated South Florida on Sat., Oct. 23, it marked the fifth season in head coach Steve Adlard?s eight in which the Golden Eagles had reached double-digits in the wins column. He also led the Golden Eagles to an eight-game winning streak earlier this season, the longest in the program?s 36-year history. He concluded his eighth season at the helm of the Golden Eagles with an 88-66-14 (.565) mark. Adlard led MU to its first-ever NCAA Tournament and C-USA regular-season title in 1997. He is second on the Marquette winning percentage list and has led the Golden Eagles to winning seasons in six of the last seven seasons. With Marquette?s victory against UW-Milwaukee on Sept. 30, 1998, he moved into second on the MU career wins list. A former goalkeeper for the British universities national team, Adlard previously was the head coach at UNC Asheville and Davis & Elkins. He is a 1972 graduate of Loughborough University in Loughborough, England. Adlard has an overall record of 141-124-23 (.530) in 14 years. He is assisted by Bryan Mogford and Dan Holcomb.

POSTSEASON HONORS The Golden Eagles were well-represented on the Postseason All-C-USA Teams. Marshall Morehead and Sean Reti were named to the first team. Midfielder Andy Hunter was named to the All-C-USA Second Team. Defenders Chad Garofola and Steve Lawrence earned All-C-USA Third Team accolades, while Lawrence and Bryan Godfrey earned spots on the C-USA All-Freshmen Team.
HEADERS After tallying only nine points last year, junior Marshall Morehead (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater Area) had a break-out season in 1999 as he led the Golden Eagles with 49 shots, 13 goals and 28 points. Each of those totals was a career-high for the striker. He also tallied a team-best four game-winning goals, including the decisive strike with just over a minute remaining in Marquette?s 1-0 upset of Creighton. Morehead went scoreless in the first three outings before scoring in eight of the next nine. The 13 goals ties him for fourth among Marquette?s single-season leaders. He was one of only three players to start all 19 games for Marquette. Morehead was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week on September 28 and to the All-C-USA First Team following the season.
RETI FOR ACTION Sean Reti (Brookfield, Wis. / East) also made a major impact in his second season in a Golden Eagle uniform. The diminutive sophomore made a successful move to the attacking midfielder position and tallied career-highs in all statistical scoring categories. He was second on the team with five goals and 17 points, and led the squad with seven assists. Three of Reti?s five goals proved to be game-winners, including the decisive goal in overtime against both UW-Milwaukee (Sept. 15) and Cincinnati (Oct. 16). After earning C-USA All-Freshmen Team honors last season, Reti earned a spot on the All-C-USA First Team this year.
ON THE HUNT One of three Golden Eagles to start all 19 contests this season, co-captain Andy Hunter (Swaffham, England / Hamonds) controlled the midfield with his physical play. The junior had six points on a goal and four assists. Hunter was named to the All-C-USA Second team in a vote of the league?s coaches.
BASS-O-MATIC Junior defender Jeremiah Bass (Racine, Wis. / Prairie School) had another solid season, once again proving himself as a defensive force at right outside back while also adding some offense. Bass had six points on four assists and one goal, which was the game-winner against Memphis on Oct. 1. He started 18 of the 19 games in which he played.
SENIOR SALUTE Senior co-captains Chad Garofola (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Prospect) and Taylor concluded their four years in Golden Eagle uniforms with strong performances against Cincinnati in the C-USA Tournament. Garofola started all 19 games this season, continued his consistent play at left outside back and was named to the All-C-USA Third Team following the season. Taylor netted his second goal of the season against the Bearcats and finished his final season with five points. The versatile Taylor started eight of 17 games, seeing action at sweeper, stopper and center midfield.
Nate Winkel (Richfield, Minn. / Richfield) also concluded his collegiate career against Cincinnati, coming off the bench at wide midfield. A two-year player for the Golden Eagles after transferring in from Maine, Winkel appeared in 17 contests this season and started two.
Marquette?s fourth senior, Jeremy Evans (Mesa, Ariz. / Phoenix JC) missed the season while rehabilitating a broken leg suffered during the spring season.
A-TRAIN Junior Mike Adrian (St. Louis, Mo. / SLUH) settled into the wide left midfield role early in the season and wound up starting 17 of the 18 games in which he played. He finished third on the team with eight points on two goals and four assists. He tallied the game-winner against DePaul on Sept. 22.
G-MAN Greg Guglielmino (Mesa, Ariz. / Phoenix JC) made a smooth transition to the Division I level and established himself as Marquette?s starting keeper in the third game of the season. The transfer from Phoenix Junior College appeared in all 19 games, starting 17. He went 9-5-0 on the season with a 1.41 GAA, four shutouts and 66 saves. Guglielmino was twice named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 4 and Oct. 18). He made a career-high 11 saves against UMKC in the regular-season finale? on November 1 in a 1-0 loss.
KIDDIE CORPS A number of first-year players saw considerable action for the Golden Eagles this season: After coming off the bench in the first four games, freshman Steve Lawrence?s (Brookfield, Wis. / Marquette) insertion into the starting lineup coincided with the first victory in Marquette?s eight-game winning streak. The 5-10 defender established himself as one of the top sweepers in the league and remained in the starting lineup for the final 15 games. He was named to both the All-C-USA Third Team and the C-USA All-Freshmen Team.
Joining Lawrence on the C-USA All-Freshmen Team was classmate Bryan Godfrey (Newburgh, Ind. / Castle). Despite missing two midseason games with a shoulder injury, Godfrey?s strong two-way play in the center midfield helped him establish himself as one of the players to watch in C-USA over the next few years. He started all 17 games in which he played and led the Marquette newcomers with eight points on two goals and four assists.
Mike Robards (Leawood, Kan. / Rockhurst) helped classmate Lawrence solidify the defense in their debut season. The physical defender started 13 of the 17 games in which he played. Theran Motl (Middleton, Wis. / Middleton) also saw significant minutes, aiding the defensive effort at both defense and midfield.
A pair of first-year strikers also played key roles for Marquette. Redshirt freshman Tom Nolan (Palatine, Ill. / St. Viator) started 10 of the 16 games in which he played and tallied six points on two goals and two assists. Freshman Eric Marshall (Waukesha, Wis. / Catholic Memorial) started five of the 17 games in which he played and added some speed and a physical presence to the MU frontline.
Redshirt freshman Todd Schramm (Cedarburg, Wis. / Marquette) started two of the seven games in which he saw action. The 6-0 keeper went 1-4-0 with a 2.45 GAA and made eight saves.
ONE-TIMERS Joe Gallo (St. Louis, Mo. / SLUH), Jeff Gerlesits (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton-Warrenville South) and Jason Hood (Wauwatosa, Wis. / East) also saw action this season. Gallo moved from the backfield to striker, starting four of the 13 games in which he played and picking up his only point of the season on an assist on Morehead?s game-winner against Creighton. Gerlesits appeared in eight games, while the speedy Hood started two of the 10 games in which he played.
C-USA LEADERS Marquette had several players ranked among the C-USA regular-season statistical leaders. Morehead finished second with 13 goals, third with 28 points and fourth with 43 shots.
