CHICAGO - Conference USA today announced its men?s soccer postseason award winners and six members of the Marquette squad earned all-conference accolades for the 1999 season. Highlighting the Marquette picks were Marshall Morehead (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater Area) and Sean Reti (Brookfield, Wis. / East), both of whom were named to the All-C-USA First Team for the first time. Four additional Golden Eagles were also named to postseason squads.
After tallying only nine points last year, Morehead had a break-out season in 1999 as he led the Golden Eagles with 49 shots, 13 goals and 28 points. Each of those totals was a career-high for the junior striker. He also tallied a team-best four game-winning goals, including the decisive strike with just over a minute remaining in Marquette?s 1-0 upset of Creighton. Morehead went scoreless in the first three outings before scoring in eight of the next nine. The 13 goals ties him for fourth among Marquette?s single-season leaders. He was one of only three players to start all 19 games for Marquette. Morehead was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week on September 28 and to the All-C-USA First Team following the season.
Reti also made a major impact in his second season in a Golden Eagle uniform. The diminutive sophomore made a successful move to the attacking midfielder position and tallied career-highs in all statistical scoring categories. He was second on the team with five goals and 17 points, and led the squad with seven assists. Three of Reti?s five goals proved to be game-winners, including the decisive goal in overtime against both UW-Milwaukee (Sept. 15) and Cincinnati (Oct. 16). After earning C-USA All-Freshmen Team honors last season, Reti earned a spot on the All-C-USA First Team this year.
Junior co-captain Andy Hunter (Swaffham, England / Hamonds) was named to the All-C-USA Second Team. One of three Golden Eagles to start all 19 contests this season, Hunter controlled the midfield with his physical play. The junior had six points on a goal and four assists.
Two Marquette defenders earned All-C-USA Third Team accolades. Senior left back Chad Garofola (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Prospect) and freshman sweeper Steve Lawrence (Brookfield, Wis. / Marquette) helped lead one of the league?s top defenses this season.Garofola started all 19 games this season, continued his consistent play at left outside back and was named to a league postseason squad for the first time since he earned All-Freshmen honors following the 1996 season. After coming off the bench in the first four games, freshman Lawrence?s insertion into the starting lineup coincided with the first victory in Marquette?s eight-game winning streak. The 5-10 defender established himself as one of the top sweepers in the league and remained in the starting lineup for the final 15 games. He scored one point on the season.
Lawrence also joined classmate Bryan Godfrey (Newburgh, Ind. / Castle) on the C-USA All-Freshmen Team. Despite missing two midseason games with a shoulder injury, Godfrey?s strong two-way play in the center midfield helped him establish himself as one of the players to watch in C-USA over the next few years. He started all 17 games in which he played and led the Marquette newcomers with eight points on two goals and four assists.
