Men's Soccer In Birmingham For C-USA Tournament

COMING UP Coach Steve Adlard?s Marquette men?s soccer team (10-8-0, 5-3-0) comes off a week of rest and jumps into the Conference USA Tournament in Birmingham, Ala., this weekend. The third-seeded Golden Eagles play sixth-seeded Cincinnati on Thu., Nov. 11, at 5 p.m. (CT). The winner of that game advances to meet #2 Saint Louis in a semifinal contest on Fri., Nov. 12, at 5 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Sun., Nov. 13, at 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK The Golden Eagles have not played since a regular-season-ending 1-0 loss to UMKC on Mon., Nov. 1.
#6 CINCINNATI AT A GLANCE After breaking into the national rankings earlier this season, head coach Jeff Cook?s Bearcats struggled over the latter half of the season and wound up as the #6 seed in the league tournament with a 3-5 mark in C-USA play. Cincinnati is currently 9-7-1 overall. Cook is in his fourth season in Cincinnati and has a 34-32-10 (.513) record. In seven seasons as a head coach, he is 65-54-15 (.541).
HEAD COACH STEVE ADLARD When Marquette defeated South Florida on Sat., Oct. 23, it marked the fifth season in head coach Steve Adlard?s eight in which the Golden Eagles had reached double-digits in the wins column. He also led the Golden Eagles to an eight-game winning streak earlier this season, the longest in the program?s 36-year history. Adlard took his Golden Eagles to the C-USA semifinals for the third time in four seasons in 1998, when MU concluded the year with a 9-11-1 record . Now in his eighth season at the helm of the Golden Eagles, he has compiled an 88-65-14 (.569) mark. Adlard led MU to its first-ever NCAA Tournament and C-USA regular-season title in 1997. He is second on the Marquette winning percentage list and has led the Golden Eagles to winning seasons in five of the last six seasons. With Marquette?s victory against UW-Milwaukee on Sept. 30, 1998, he moved into second on the MU career wins list. A former goalkeeper for the British universities national team, Adlard previously was the head coach at UNC Asheville and Davis & Elkins. He is a 1972 graduate of Loughborough University in Loughborough, England. Adlard has an overall record of 141-123-23 (.531) in 14 years. He is assisted by Bryan Mogford and Dan Holcomb.
IN THE POLLS The Golden Eagles dropped one spot to eighth in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region ranking this week. In the remainder of the NSCAA Regional Rankings: Washington is #4 and Portland #7 in the Far West, Cincinnati and Oakland are #6 and #7, respectively, in the Great Lakes, Saint Louis is #1, Creighton tied for #3 and UMKC #7 in the Midwest, and UAB is #4 and South Florida is tied for #10 in the South.
Marquette was not ranked in any national polls last week, however several Golden Eagles? opponents did garner national recognition. Saint Louis is #6 by the NSCAA and #9 in Soccer America. Creighton is #14 in the Soccer America poll and is #15 in the NSCAA poll. Washington is #15 in Soccer America and is tied for #20 in the NSCAA poll. Portland is #18 in Soccer America. UAB makes its national debut this week, ranking #23 in the NSCAA poll.
C-USA LEADERS Marquette had several players ranked among the C-USA statistical leaders last week. Marshall Morehead (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater Area) led the league with 28 points and 13 goals, and was fourth with 43 shots. Sean Reti (Brookfield, Wis. / East) was tied for seventh with 17 points, tied for fourth with seven assists and is sixth with 36 shots. Greg Guglielmino (Mesa, Ariz. / Phoenix JC) was fifth with a 1.40 GAA, eighth with 53 saves and tied for third with four shutouts.
Among the team leaders, Marquette is fourth with 83 points and 29 assists, tied for fourth with 27 goals and is sixth with 175 shots. On the defensive side, the Golden Eagles were fifth with a 1.60 GAA, seventh with 61 saves and tied for fourth with four shutouts.
AT THE C-USA TOURNAMENT Marquette has earned three straight trips to the C-USA Tournament semifinals. The Golden Eagles have a 4-4 overall record in league championship play. Last season, sixth-seeded Marquette upset #3 UAB 3-1 in overtime before falling to Memphis 3-0 in the semifinals.
