Volleyball Team Wins Marquette Challenge

Milwaukee, Wis. - The Marquette volleyball team captured the 1999 Marquette Challenge title with a 3-0 slate in weekend matches. The Golden Eagles defeated Mississippi State 15-12, 15-6, 15-6 Saturday evening to clinch the crown. Marquette extended its winning streak to five matches and is now 5-2 on the season. Mississippi State dipped to 2-3.
The Golden Eagles hit .195 (47-22-128) and served 10 aces. Marquette also controlled the defensive side of the net, registering nine total team blocks and limiting MSU to a .115 hitting percentage.
Marquette was led by Chris Curtin's match-high 14 kills. Kelly Kaylor had a fine performance with 13 kills, a .321 hitting percentage and three service aces. Vesna Grbavac led all players with 14 kills and added four block assists and nine kills. Mehgan Devine had a match-leading six block assists.
Christine Owen paced MSU with 10 kills and hit .233. Melanie DiMUzio had 12 digs, nine kills and three block assists.
