The Marquette women?s soccer team got a goal from Lanette Rossini at the 1:13 mark, and the Golden Eagles and the junior midfielder never looked back in downing in-state rival UW-Green Bay 8-0 this evening. Rossini went on to get two more goals for the first hat trick of her collegiate career and the Golden Eagles went on to shut down the Phoenix, out-shooting UWGB 33-1 in a driving rain storm to earn their first shut out of the season.
?We?re obviously pleased with the result,? Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. ?We did some positive things on defense, which is what we were concentrating on all week. Our focus tonight was on team defense, and we were exceptional on that end. It?s also a good game when everybody contributes as we had tonight.?
Besides Rossini?s hat trick and seven points, there were several other highlights for the Golden Eagles. Foremost among those may have been a goal by Kelly Roethe, which gave her 101 points for her career. Marquette?s all-time leading scorer was presented with a game ball following the contest, the first such ball awarded to a player during Roeders? tenure.
?Everything Kelly gets is well-deserved, just like that goal,? Roeders said. ?That was one of the great college goals I?ve seen.?
Rossini had a hand in Roethe?s milestone goal. After taking a cross-field serve from Jenny Strachota, Rossini crossed a ball onto the right line of the box to a streaking Roethe, who took the volley and sent a bullet into the back right of the net from 11-yards out. The score in the game?s fifth minute gave Marquette a two-goal advantage, and fellow senior Erin Morgan made it 3-0 in the 19th minute with her second goal of the season. Marquette took that lead into the break.
The second frame also featured several notable moments for the Golden Eagles. Sophomore Stephanie Welch tallied the first goal of her career just minutes into the second half, and then netted the second goal of her career at the 70:30 mark. Rossini then sandwiched her second and third goals around the first career goal of freshman Kristin Halley to complete the scoring at 8-0. Freshmen Diana Detrie, Ashley Spakowitz and Jaime Krofta also each picked up the first points of their respective careers, all on second half assists.
Marquette keepers Mo Bothwell and Ashleigh Koenig shared the Golden Eagles' first shutout of the season.
?It?s a beautiful thing to have depth like we have,? Roeders said. ?We have so many players who can contribute, and when they get into the game, they want to produce. That playing experience will be a benefit to us later in the year.?
The Golden Eagles enter conference play next weekend with road games against Saint Louis (Fri., Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. [CT]) and Houston (Sun., Sept. 19 at 1 p.m.).
