Men's Soccer Defends Milwaukee Cup Title

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - For the third straight game, the Marquette men?s soccer team dominated play for a majority of the game. Fortunately for the Golden Eagles, the outcome was different this evening, as Marquette earned its first win of the season with a 3-2 overtime victory over UW-Milwaukee. The win over the cross town rival Panthers also ensures that the Golden Eagles retain the Milwaukee Cup and city bragging rights for another year.
Sophomore Sean Reti ended the game at the 92:15 mark of the extra frame with a dazzling goal, his first of the year. The diminutive striker, who created problems for the Panther defense throughout the game, took a pass from Marshall Morehead and perfectly chipped an eight-yard lofter over the oncoming UWM keeper to get Marquette in the win column.
?Sean Reti played very well,? Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. ?He took on defenders one-on-one and continuously beat them and created space for himself and opportunities for us. And then he scored the game-winner, which was icing on the cake. And what a goal it was.?
Reti?s game-winner ended a contest in which Marquette scored more goals that it had in the previous four games combined. However, the game didn?t start so promisingly for the Golden Eagles, who saw UW Milwaukee?s Scott Dombrowski score on a 13-yard header off a free kick in the 29th minute to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Marquette then gained control of play for the remainder of the half. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Panthers 9-2 in the opening frame and knotted the score at 1-1 on another strong play from Reti. After gaining control of the ball on the defensive end of the field, Reti dribbled through several Panther defenders and made it all the way to the box, where he layed a pass off to an unmarked Morehead, who drilled an eight-yard bullet into the back right of the net for his second goal in as many games.
The Golden Eagles kept the momentum going in the second half, gaining their first lead of the season at the 61:51 mark when Mike Adrian sent a long cross to Tom Nolan, whose diving header got past UWM keeper Chris Dadaian to give Marquette a 2-1 lead. It was the first goal of Nolan?s career.
?All three of our strikers (Morehead, Nolan and Reti) played exceptionally well tonight,? Adlard said. ?Morehead and reti have become very comfortable with each other and are continuing to push each other to become better players.?
Behind solid play from freshman keeper Todd Schramm, who broke up several UWM chances, the Golden Eagles held off several late Panther charges before Joe Luedke?s header tied things up at the 86:00 mark and, seemingly, gave the Panthers momentum.
Reti?s first goal of the season ended things quickly, though, giving a patient Marquette team its first win of the season while ending UW-Milwaukee?s season-opening four-game win streak.
?I hope this is a real springboard, I know it was a real confidence booster for us,? Adlard said. ?We were exhausted out there, but showed great character. We?re being patient with this group because this is a new team, but we?ve shown progress in every game and this could be a turning point: teams that are losing go down by degrees, but they rise instantly to the top when they win.?
The Golden Eagles are now 1-4, while UWM is 4-1.
The Panthers are on the road again on Sun., Sept. 19, when they take on regional rival Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., at 4 p.m. (CT).
