EVANSTON, Ill. - The Marquette men?s soccer team won its second consecutive game this afternoon, shutting down Northwestern 3-0 at the Wildcats? Lakeside Field. Marshall Morehead scored for the third straight game and the Golden Eagles utilized a strong wind in the opening frame to improve to 2-4.
?Our offense has been growing and has come together over the past few games,? Marquette coach Steve Adlard said. ?We looked strong from the opening moments again today. Now we?re starting to see some positive results from the lessons we learned in those early losses.
Playing through a strong diagonal wind, Marquette?s offense and defense clicked from the get-go. Morehead netted what turned out to be the game-winner only 6:19 into the contest, pushing a blast to the low near post from 18 yards out after being set up by Tom Nolan. Nolan also set up the Golden Eagles? second goal of the contest, Mike Adrian?s first goal of the year, which came at the 14:49 mark. Morehead put an exclamation point on the scoring for Marquette in the game?s 30th minute, tallying his fourth goal of the season, and second of the game, with the help of some nifty passing from teammates Andy Hunter and Nate Winkel.
?Today we did what we?ve been trying to do all season: we scored first,? Adlard said. ?And a lot of that credit can go to Morehead. He?s playing very strong right now. That first goal relieved the pressure and let us play our type of game.?
The Golden Eagle defense, once again led by freshman sweeper Steve Lawrence, clamped down on the Wildcats, allowing them only four shots. Junior keeper Greg Guglielmino earned the first shutout of his Marquette career with two saves.
With the win, Marquette improves to 2-4. Northwestern falls to 0-6.
Marquette returns to Milwaukee for a match at Valley Fields on Wed., Sept. 22, when the Golden Eagles host Conference USA rival DePaul at 7 p.m. (CT).
