COMING UP THIS WEEK Coach Steve Adlard?s Marquette men?s soccer team (1-4) looks to extend its two-game winning streak with a trio of games this week. On Wed., Sept. 22, the Golden Eagles host Conference USA rival DePaul at Valley Fields at 7 p.m. (CT). Marquette then goes back on the road for a non-conference contest at Drake on Fri., Sept. 24. The Golden Eagles battle the Bulldogs in Des Moines at 4 p.m. Marquette concludes the week with another C-USA clash, at Louisville on Sun., Sept. 26 at Noon.
LAST WEEK Marquette snapped a five-game losing streak, defended its Milwaukee Cup title, and earned its first win of 1999, all in a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory over UW-Milwaukee at Uihlein Soccer Park on Wed., Sept. 15. The Golden Eagles again controlled play for a majority of the game, but seemed to lose some steam when they allowed a game-tying goal at the 86:00 mark. However, a quick rush and a dazzling goal from sophomore striker Sean Reti (Brookfield, Wis. / East) just two-plus minutes into overtime put Marquette in the win column for the first time in 1999. Marquette built on the victory over the crosstown Panthers with a 3-0 win over Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., on Sun., Sept. 19. The Golden Eagles netted each of their goals in the game?s opening 30 minutes and cruised comfortably to the shutout victory.
DE PAUL AT A GLANCE First-year head coach Tom Secco has his Blue Demons on the rise. After finishing at the bottom of the league standings a year ago with a 1-7 mark, DePaul is off to a 2-0 start in C-USA action this year. The Blue Demons scored upset home victories over Louisville (2-0 on Sept. 12) and UNC Charlotte (1-0 in overtime on Sept. 19). They are currently 2-3 overall. Junior striker Shane Hudson paces DePaul in scoring with five points, while Joe Ahearn, who tallied the game-winner at Charlotte, has four points. Sophomore Jash Chavero and junior David Wiggins have split time between the pipes for the Blue Demons. The duo has a 2.00 goals against average, 20 saves and two shutouts in 450 minutes. In 18 games against DePaul, Marquette has never suffered a loss, owning a 17-0-1 lead in the all-time series. The Golden Eagles defeated the Blue Demons 1-0 in Chicago a year ago.
DRAKE AT A GLANCE After starting the season 0-3, Drake has rebounded with back-to-back wins in its past two games. The Bulldogs downed Northwestern 3-2 in overtime at Evanston on Sept. 17 and shut out Western Illinois 2-0 at home in their most recent outing on Sept. 19. Now in his second season at the Des Moines, Iowa, school, head coach Sean Holmes has an 8-14-1 (.370) mark. In seven-plus season overall, he is 86-40-3 (.678). Keeper Brian Perkins, a 6-4 sophomore, has been in goal for all 465 minutes for the Bulldogs and has a 1.74 GAA to go along with 18 saves. Sophomore midfielder Dusty Grau leads Drake with six points on three goals. After a 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs in Milwaukee last season, Marquette holds a 1-0-1 series lead over the Bulldogs, who compete in the Missouri Valley Conference.
LOUISVILLE AT A GLANCE Louisville is coming off a 4-0 upset of South Florida on Sat., Sept. 18, that improved the Cardinals? record to 3-2-1 on the season. Sophomore Jeremy Morales patrols the net for the Cards with a 0.63 GAA, three shutouts and 27 saves. A sturdy Louisville defense is led by juniors Stuart Langrish and Tory Harris. Preseason All-C-USA selection Shawn Faria, a 5-11 junior midfielder, leads U of L with six points. Head coach Tony Colavecchia is in his fourth season at Louisville, where he has compiled a 25-36-4 (.415) record. In 11-plus seasons overall, Colavecchia is 122-95-17 (.558). The Golden Eagles have defeated Louisville in each of the four previous meetings between the teams, including a 2-0 win in Louisville during the 1998 season. The Cardinals host Indiana in the annual border-war game on Sept. 23 before welcoming Marquette.
HEAD COACH STEVE ADLARD Marquette?s Steve Adlard took his Golden Eagles to the C-USA semifinals for the third time in four seasons in 1998, when MU concluded the year with a 9-11-1 record . Now in his eighth season at the helm of the Golden Eagles, Adlard has compiled a 80-61-14 (.561) mark. He led MU to its first-ever NCAA Tournament and C-USA regular-season title in 1997. Adlard is second on the Marquette winning percentage list and has led the Golden Eagles to winning seasons in five of the last six seasons. With Marquette?s victory against UW-Milwaukee on Sept. 30, 1998, he moved into second on the MU career wins list. A former goalkeeper for the British universities national team, Adlard previously was the head coach at UNC Asheville and Davis & Elkins. He is a 1972 graduate of Loughborough University in Loughborough, England. Adlard has an overall record of 133-119-23 (.525) in 13 years. He is assisted by Bryan Mogford and Dan Holcomb.
IN THE POLLS Marquette is not ranked in any polls this week, however several Golden Eagles? opponents did garner national and regional recognition. Creighton, which comes to town on Oct. 3, is #3 in the NSCAA poll and #7 in Soccer America. C-USA rival Saint Louis is #8 in the Soccer America poll and #8 (tied) in the NSCAA poll. Fellow league school Cincinnati is #15 in the NSCAA poll. Portland is #25 (tied) in the NSCAA and #16 by Soccer America. In the NSCAA Regional Rankings: Portland is #5 and Washington #9 in the Far West, Cincinnati, Oakland and UW-Green Bay are #2, #4 and #10 (tied), respectively, in the Great Lakes, and Creighton is #1, Saint Louis #3, Memphis #5 and UMKC #10 (tied) in the Midwest.
HEADERS Junior Marshall Morehead (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater Area) continued his strong start to the ?99 season with his second goal in as many games against UW-Milwaukee. The 6-0 junior also set up Reti?s game-winning score in the extra frame. He continued his torrid start with two goals at Northwestern, getting the game-winner on an 18-yard blast at the 6:19 mark and concluding the scoring in the game?s 30th minute. Morehead leads the team with four goals, nine points and 15 shots. The four goals equals his goal output from last season.
RETI FOR ACTION Striker Sean Reti (Brookfield, Wis. / East) broke out of a four-game scoreless slump with a big night against UW-Milwaukee. The diminutive sophomore, who created problems for the Panther defense throughout the game, took a pass from Marshall Morehead and perfectly chipped an eight-yard lofter over the oncoming UWM keeper into the net for his first goal of the season. Earlier in the contest, Reti gained control of the ball on the defensive end and went coast-to-coast before setting up Morehead and Marquette?s opening goal of the evening. The three points against the Panthers were his first of the season.
LEAPING TOM One of the big surprises of the early season for the Golden Eagles has been the play of redshirt freshman Tom Nolan (Palatine, Ill. / St. Viator). After a strong performance off the bench in the season-opening loss at Portland, Nolan has been in the starting lineup in every game since, and, at 6-4, has become a force to be reckoned with up top. He tallied the first goal of his collegiate career on a diving header to put Marquette up 2-1 on UW-Milwaukee last Wednesday. Nolan then collected assists on the first two goals in Marquette?s 3-0 win at Northwestern. He is second on the team with four points.
A-TRAIN Junior Mike Adrian (St. Louis, Mo. / SLUH) collected his first point of 1999 when his long cross from the left wing found the back of the net after connecting with Tom Nolan?s head. He followed that up by netting his first goal of the season at Northwestern. The dependable two-way player has been getting the starting nod at left outside midfielder in the last four games and has three points.
AROUND THE NET When junior keeper Greg Guglielmino (Mesa, Ariz. / Phoenix JC) played the whole 90 minutes in the win at Northwestern, it marked the first time all season a Marquette keeper had gone wire-to-wire. A junior college transfer, the 6-1 Guglielmino registered his first shutout in a Golden Eagle uniform by making two saves. He is now 1-1 with a 2.00 GAA on the season.
AROUND THE NET Junior Andy Hunter (Swaffham, England / Hamonds) and senior Nate Winkel (Richfield, Minn. / Richfield) were each credited with an assist on Morehead?s second goal at Northwestern ? it was Winkel?s first point of 1999 ? redshirt freshman Todd Schramm (Cedarburg, Wis. / Marquette) looked strong in the second half against the Panthers, making a season-high four saves and earning Marquette?s first win.
