LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Marquette men?s soccer team put its disappointing 0-4 start to the season behind it today, getting over .500 for the first time this season with a 2-1 road win over Louisville. Junior Marshall Morehead continued his amazing goal-scoring streak with both goals as Marquette won its fifth straight to improve to 5-4-0 and 2-1-0 in Conference USA action.
?This was a good, strong performance today,? Marquette coach Steve Adlard said. ?We looked tired at times, which will happen at the end of such a busy week, but we took a giant step forward this afternoon. We had only a few shots, but had lots of possession and controlled the flow for a majority of the match.?
As he had in the previous three contests, Morehead netted a goal within the game?s first 15 minutes to stake the Golden Eagles to an early lead. This one came at the 1:30 mark of the game, when Morehead slotted a Sean Reti cross past U of L keeper Jeremy Morales to put Marquette up 1-0. The Cards countered in the game?s 15th minute when Justin Prather took a Shawn Faria pass and beat MU keeper Greg Guglielmino. The teams battled at the midfield for the remainder of the half and went into the lockerrooms tied at 1-1.
Morehead?s second goal of the game would be the only offensive production of the second frame. The junior from Stillwater, Minn., ended up in a one-on-one run against Morales off a Marquette counter attack and chipped the Louisville keeper for the game-winner at the 57:32 mark. The goal concluded a week in which Morehead scored five goals in three games, including all four during this weekend?s matches. He has tallied all nine of his goals this season during the past six games, and has scored in six-straight. He leads the team and is among the C-USA leaders with 19 points.
?Marshall played a tremendous game, as he has been doing during this current run of success,? Adlard said. ?He has a confidence right now that is carrying over to all aspects of his game. Both of his goals were very skilled and he continues to ease the pressure on his teammates with those early goals.?
The Marquette defense also looked strong again, allowing only two shots on goal. Freshman starters Steve Lawrence and Mike Robards were forced to step up their games when junior co-captain Andy Hunter went down with an ankle injury and missed the final 32 minutes of the game. Guglielmino also had a solid performance between the pipes for Marquette, earning his fourth straight solo win.
Marquette returns home on Fri., Oct. 1, to host C-USA rival Memphis at Valley Fields at 7 p.m. (CT).
