Morgan Lifts Women's Soccer Over UAB

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette women?s soccer team handed UAB its first Conference USA loss of the season in a 1-0 victory at Valley Fields this afternoon. Senior Erin Morgan headed the game-winner in at the 64:50 mark to help the Golden Eagles improve to 4-4-2 and 2-1-1 in the league.

?We?re thrilled with this win and thrilled with being back in the league race,? Marquette coach Markus Roeders said. ?Getting back to .500 was one of our goals heading into this weekend. We played an exceptional first half, dominated for a lot of the second half and got a typical, scrappy goal from Erin. It?s basically just how we wanted things to work out.?

Both teams battled a strong wind throughout the game, but the Golden Eagles controlled play going into the wind in the opening frame. Marquette got off nine shots and held a potent UAB attack to only one shot in the first 45 minutes. Despite that Marquette edge, the teams went into the intermission tied at 0-0.

The Lady Blazers had a slight surge in the opening moments of the second half before Marquette regained the upper hand. Morgan?s game-winner, her third goal of the season, came off a cross from Anna Frisk in the 65th minute of action.

?I knew Anna was going to serve the ball, so I knew I had to be there to get it,? Morgan said. ?It feels really good and it?s what we needed now. We?ve gotten our confidence back this weekend.?

UAB never had any good scoring opportunities in the remaining 25 minutes of regulation. Marquette keeper Mo Bothwell notched her second shutout of the week while making only one save.

?I like where we?re at defensively right now,? Roeders said. ?Our starters are settling into a groove back there and our younger players are starting to feel comfortable when they come in off the bench. Nobody has kept UAB to three shots this season.?

UAB fell to 4-6-0 and 3-1-0 with the loss.

Marquette opens a stretch of six consecutive road games at Louisville on Fri., Oct. 1. The Golden Eagles and the Lady Cards are scheduled for a 6 p.m. (CT) kick-off.
