COMING UP THIS WEEK Coach Steve Adlard?s Marquette men?s soccer team (5-4-0, 2-1-0) seeks to prolong a current five-game winning streak with a pair of home games at Valley Fields this weekend. The Golden Eagles welcome Conference USA foe Memphis to Milwaukee on Fri., Oct. 1, in a 7 p.m. (CT) game, before hosting nationally-ranked Creighton on Sun., Oct. 3, at 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK With the help of the red-hot Marshall Morehead (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater Area), Marquette came all the way back from its 0-4 start with three wins last week to climb over .500 for the first time this season. The Golden Eagles also scored two crucial early-season C-USA wins. Marquette opened play last week with a 2-1 victory over DePaul at Valley Fields on Wed., Sept. 22. C-USA Offensive Player of the Week Morehead scored early and Mike Adrian (St. Louis, Mo. / SLUH) secured the win with his second goal in as many games.
Marquette then went back on the road for a 2-0 non-conference victory over Drake in Des Moines on Fri., Sept. 24, before defeating Louisville 2-1 on its home turf on Sun., Sept. 26. Morehead tallied all four Golden Eagle goals in the weekend matches.
MEMPHIS AT A GLANCE First-year Memphis coach Richie Grant will bring his Tigers to Milwaukee with a 4-3-0, 1-1-0 record after a 4-0 loss at Saint Louis on Sept. 25. Grant comes to Memphis after a four-year stint as head coach at Lambuth University and his head coaching record is now 57-32-2 (.637). The Tigers are led by keeper Brian Covey, a 5-9 senior who has 23 saves and a 2.57 goals against average (GAA). Strikers Sean Fraser, who leads Memphis with 11 points, and Steven Brooks, a Preseason All-C-USA selection, lead a dangerous Tiger offense. Marquette and Memphis split a pair of games in 1998, with the Golden Eagles winning a 1-0 regular-season thriller and the Tigers exacting revenge with a 3-0 victory in a C-USA semifinal match. The Golden Eagles hold a 7-4-1 lead in the all-time series.
CREIGHTON AT A GLANCE After earning the top spot in the Sept. 13 NSCAA Top 25, coach Bret Simon?s Bluejays have stumbled to a 1-1-1 record in its following three games and are now #12. Creighton saw its 15-match home win streak ended on Sun., Sept. 26, with a 1-0 loss to Gonzaga. Prior to that, the Bluejays were taken to overtime before edging Florida Atlantic 2-1 on Fri., Sept. 24. Overall, Creighton is 4-1-1 on the season, including a 1-0 win over #2 Saint Louis on the Billikens? home turf. Simon?s deep offensive attack is led by forwards Mike Bustos and Brian Mullan, each of whom have tallied a team-high seven points this season. Tom Zawislan, a 6-2 senior, mans the nets for Creighton. He has four shutouts and a 0.33 GAA behind a defense that has allowed only 11 shots on goal all season. Simon is in his fifth season at the Omaha., Neb., school, where he has a 67-18-8 (.763) record. Overall, he has a 151-59-21 (.699) mark in 11-plus seasons. The teams last met in Omaha on Oct. 11, 1996, with the Golden Eagles coming out on top of a 2-1 contest. Marquette holds a 2-1 series lead over Creighton. The Bluejays will battle Wisconsin in Madison on Fri., Oct. 1, before arriving in Milwaukee.
HEAD COACH STEVE ADLARD Marquette?s Steve Adlard took his Golden Eagles to the C-USA semifinals for the third time in four seasons in 1998, when MU concluded the year with a 9-11-1 record . Now in his eighth season at the helm of the Golden Eagles, Adlard has compiled a 83-61-14 (.570) mark. He led MU to its first-ever NCAA Tournament and C-USA regular-season title in 1997. With Marquette?s victory against UW-Milwaukee on Sept. 30, 1998, he moved into second on the MU career wins list. STREAKING Marquette?s current five-game winning streak is its longest since the 1996 season, when the Golden Eagles won seven straight from Sept. 22-Oct. 11. Included in that span were wins over both of this weekend?s opponents, Memphis and Creighton. MU?s longest win streak a year ago was four games, from Sept. 27-Oct. 9. That 1996 seven-game winning streak is the longest in the history of the Marquette soccer program. Their current streak is tied for the third-longest in the program?s history. Marquette?s longest unbeaten streak is 13 games, recorded between the 1984 and 1985 seasons.
HEADERS Morehead continued to be the catalyst for the current winning streak as he continued his amazing early-season goal-scoring pace last week. The 6-0 junior striker has now scored in six straight games, netting all nine of his goals this season in that span. He also tallied the critical game-winning assist at UW-Milwaukee to kick-off Marquette?s run of success. He also has scored the opening goal of the contest within the first 15 minutes of each of the last four matches.
He put Marquette up 1-0 at the 4:56 mark against DePaul after picking up a Blue Demon misplay in the box and blasting past the stunned DePaul keeper from 16 yards out. At Drake, Morehead headed in the game-winner at the 14:16 mark off a cross from Sean Reti and also connected in the game?s 39th minute. Morehead received another Reti cross and pushed it past the Louisville keeper for the game-winning goal at the 1:30 mark on Sunday. He later scored on a skillful chip shot over the Louisville keeper, beating the Cardinal goalie after a one-on-one off a counter attack.
For his efforts last week, he was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week. Morehead was the first Golden Eagles to garner league honors since Jim Welch earned back-to-back C-USA Defensive Player of the Week awards on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, 1998. After scoring nine points last season, Morehead leads both Marquette and Conference USA with 19 points and nine goals this season. He is tied for 18th in the nation with 1.00 goal per game.
RETI FOR ACTION Sophomore Sean Reti (Brookfield, Wis. / East) tallied an assist in each of Marquette?s three wins last week and now has a team-leading four on the season. He has six points total, good for second on the squad. Reti has settled into his new role as a wide attacking midfielder this season and has formed a potent offensive duo with Morehead.
A-TRAIN Adrian?s game-winning goal against DePaul was the first of his career. He settled a Bryan Godfrey header off a Sean Reti cross and sent a knuckler past a fooled DePaul keeper for his second goal in as many games. After going scoreless last season, Adrian is third on the team with five points this year. He has taken over a starting role as the left outside midfielder.
G-MAN Junior keeper Greg Guglielmino (Mesa, Ariz. / Phoenix JC) has established himself as the main man between the pipes for Marquette with four straight wins. Guglielmino looked solid in all three wins last week, making a season-high four saves against DePaul, recording his second shutout of the season at Drake and breaking up several scoring chances and making two saves at Louisville. The 6-1 junior college transfer also has played the full 90 minutes in each of the last four games after splitting time during the opening games of the season. He is 4-1-0 with 15 saves and a 1.38 GAA.
BASS-O-MATIC Junior Jeremiah Bass (Racine, Wis. / Prairie School) continued his strong junior season with three more good outings last week. The defender tallied assists on both Morehead goals at Drake and led a defense that allowed only nine shots on goal in three contests. Bass now has three points this season.
AROUND THE NET Junior Andy Hunter (Swaffham, England / Hamonds), who left the Louisville game with a bruised left foot, is probable for this weekend?s games ? his running mate in the center midfield, freshman Bryan Godfrey (Newburgh, Ind. / Castle), collected his first collegiate point with an assist on Adrian?s game-winner against the Blue Demons ? freshman Mike Robards (Leawood, Kan. / Rockhurst) returned to the starting lineup at Louisville.
