MILWAUKEE, Wis. -
The Marquette women?s soccer team utilized a strong early second half and withstood the physical war to earn its first victory of the season, a high-scoring 5-4 win over Evansville. Freshman Kate Gordon netted the game-winner on a break-away in the game?s 88th minute to boost Marquette?s record to 1-2.
?It?s the first win and we needed a positive result,? Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. ? I don?t want to play too many more like this one, but we played a hard, scrappy game for 90 minutes and beat a good team - we?ll take wins anyway they?ll come.?
Evansville, winner of the last three Missouri Valley Conference titles, got on the board first, when two-time MVC Player of the Year Krissy Meek got free in the box and punched a serve past Marquette keeper Mo Bothwell from seven yards out in only the third minute of action. Dana Schierman?s first collegiate points pulled Marquette even at 14:06. The junior defended settled a deflected cross and sent an 18-yard blast to the far left corner of the net to knot the game at 1-1. Evansville and Marquette traded goals again, with the Aces?s Niki Watkins notching the score an a nifty give-and-go with striker Jennifer Lembeck, and the Golden Eagles? Kelly Roethe connecting on a penalty kick after Gordon was dragged down in the box. Evansville took the lead into the break, however, when Holly Wimberg got behind the Marquette defense, scooped up a re-directed loft from Krista McKendree and pushed it into the net with under a minute left in the first half.
The Golden Eagles came out strong in the second frame, controlling play in their offensive end for the first 25 minutes of the half and taking a 4-3 lead on back-to-back goals from seniors Lanette Rossini and Erin Morgan. Rossini connected on a 5-yard header off a Roethe serve and ensuing scramble in the box at 45:54. Morgan tallied her first goal of the year from two-yards out after UE keeper Beth Csukas stopped a point-blank header from Katherine Ward, but couldn?t control the rebound.
Gordon?s impressive insurance goal turned out to be the difference. The freshman took a long serve from Ward, raced past two defenders and juked Ace keeper Katie Howard before sending in a left-footer from eight yards out. Lembeck made things interesting with a 14-yard blast to the far post at 89:22, but Marquette clamped down to hold on for the win.
?What was big was that we had some clutch players step up when we needed them,? Roeders said. ?Lanette played her best game so far this year, as did Rhegan Hyypio. We also got some good performances off the bench from Anne Dalecky and Diana Detrie in the second half. A lot of people stepped up for us and we showed flashes of playing the way I know we can.?
After the dust settled, a total of only 28 fouls had been called, but Marquette was issued two yellow cards and Evansville played the last 20 minutes down a player after Nicole Matheson was issued a red card for a tackle from behind. The Golden Eagles also lost junior striker Lecia Schuetz for an undetermined amount of time with a badly-sprained left ankle.
The Golden Eagles hit the road for their next contest, a Sun., Sept. 5, game in Knoxville, Tenn., against the University of Tennessee. The Golden Eagles and Lady Vols are slated for a 1 p.m. (CT) kick-off.
