The Marquette women?s soccer team fell to 1-3 on the young 1999 season with a 4-2 loss to Tennessee here this afternoon. Although the match was tied at the break, Marquette had to play catch-up the entire game and wasted two goals from senior midfielder Kelly Roethe.
?We?re letting in too many goals and it is very disappointing,? Head Coach Markus Roeders said. ?In every game, we?re trying to play catch-up, and with the way we?re giving up goals, its not going to work. We?re not going to win 5-4 games every night.?
The Golden Eagles had trouble generating offensive chances for a majority of the game, as both Roethe goals came courtesy of penalty kicks. Tennessee midfielder Kendyl Michner opened the scoring 13:37 into the match when she headed in a direct kick by junior Kelly Berrall. Roethe knotted the scoring in the game?s 21st minute when she drilled a PK past UT keeper Sarah Shivley after the Lady Vols were called for a handball in the box.
All-SEC selection Laura Lauter pushed the Tennessee lead back to one after receiving a through-ball and lofting a 20-yarder past MU starting keeper Mo Bothwell. The resilient Golden Eagles knotted the score at 2-2 on Roethe?s second penalty kick of the afternoon at 26:22 after freshman Kate Gordon was fouled in the box.
Tennessee moved ahead for good early in the second frame when Lauter got behind the Marquette defense with a serve from Michner and found the lower left corner of the goal. Allison Campbell added an insurance goal for UT with 17 minutes remaining. The All-SEC striker took a cleared ball from MU backup keeper Ashleigh Koenig and fired a shot from 45 yards out back to the net before Koenig could recover.
?We were sluggish and never got into a rhythm,? Roeders said. ?We tried almost everything today, including playing seven freshmen together, and nothing worked for us.?
Marquette fell to 1-3 with the loss, while Tennessee improved its record to 1-1.
The Golden Eagles now have a week to prepare for their next game, a home contest with UW-Green Bay a week from today, Sun., Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. (CT).
