Marquette Posts First Victory Of 1999 Campaign

West Lafayette, Ind. - The Marquette volleyball team registered its first victory of the 1999 season in the final round of the Mortar Board Purdue Premier Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind. Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles defeated Stephen F. Austin 15-7, 4-15, 15-11, 15-1. It was the first career victory for head coach Laura Farina. Marquette is now 1-2 on the season, Stephen F. Austin fell to 0-4.
The Golden Eagles turned in their best hitting performance of the young season, registering a .255 hitting percentage. Marquette also controlled the defensive side of the net, posting five block solos and 10 block assists. In game four, Marquette hit .485 (17-1-33) and limited SFA to -.036 (6-7-28).
Vesna Grbavac turned in another strong performance with a team-high 19 kills. Chris Curtin registered her second straight double-digit kill performance with 16. She also hit .438 (16-2-32) and had four block assists. Mehgan Devine recorded 14 kills and three block solos and hit .357 (14-4-28).
SFA's Shana Neimann led all players with 20 kills. Heather Stumbaugh added 17 kills and a match-high 19 digs.
