UW-Green Bay Edges Men's Soccer In OT

Sept. 8, 1999
MILWAUKEE, Wis.
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix spoiled the 1999 Valley Fields debut of the Marquette men?s soccer team this evening, getting past the Golden Eagles 2-1 in overtime. Marquette controlled play for 80 minutes of play, but a defensive lapse allowed UWGB?s Nick Lessard to slam home the game-winner at the 92-minute mark.
?We made some crucial errors,? Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. ?Our defenders played well in the back, but made the occasional mistake that proved to be critical. We also played well up front, but we couldn?t finish.?
The Phoenix got on the scoreboard at the 10:02 mark when Lessard picked up a turnover and flipped it to Chad Bodnar, who blasted a 30-yarder that MU keeper Greg Guglielmino tipped. The ball didn?t go over the net, however, it hit the bottom of the cross bar and fell downward across the goal line.
?From that goal on, we had control of the game,? Adlard said. ?Our keepers didn?t have to make any saves and we generated some decent chances, but we couldn?t put everything together.?
In the remainder of the half, Marquette earned five corners and fired five shots on goal, including the first Golden Eagle goal of the season. Junior co-captain Andy Hunter one-timed a Jeremiah Bass cross to the far post from five yards out to knot the game at 1-1 at the 28:05 mark. It was Hunter?s first goal since Sept. 14, 1997, when he tallied the game-winner against Ohio State.
A scoreless second half saw Marquette controlling play in their offensive end to no avail. A late rush, led by sophomore striker Sean Reti was broken up by the Green Bay defense, and Phoenix keeper Josh Lynk performed solidly in net all night, making seven saves.
UW-Green Bay struck quickly in the extra frame, after an initial push from Marquette, UWGB?s Scott Black sent a long ball to an unmarked Eric Urben on the right wing. Urben took the space given him before sending a cross into the box that seemed to freeze several Marquette players. Lessard slid on to the cross and put it past keep Todd Schramm for the game-winner.
?We to be patient because there is going to be a learning period,? Adlard said. ?We?re still trying to figure out how to play together. But it is coming together. I thought Bryan Godfrey and Andy Hunter played well at midfield and really looked comfortable together out there. Once we get some confidence, we?ll have a team here. We?re not a team, yet.?
The Golden eagles fall to 0-3 with the loss, while UW-Green Bay improves to 2-0-1.
Marquette opens its Conference USA schedule this Sun., Sept. 12, with a game at UAB. The Golden Eagles and the Blazers are scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) kick-off at UAB?s West Campus Field.
