MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team dropped a 76-55 decision to Drake at the Drake Knapp Center Tuesday night. Megan Wright led four Drake players in double digits with 15 points, while Erin Richards scored 14 points and added a career-high nine rebounds.
Marquette led for much of the first half, leading by as many as seven points at 19-12. But Drake bounced back thanks to the shooting of Wright and Richards, each of whom scored 10 points in the first half. Richards drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Bulldogs a 34-31 intermission lead.
Drake took control in the second half by pounding the boards, collecting 34 second-half rebounds including 11 on the offensive end. The Bulldogs outscored Marquette 31-14 over the initial 13 1/2 minutes of the half, and led by as many as 26 points. Drake was helped by the cold shooting of Marquette, who hit just 19.4 percent of its shots on seven of 36 shooting. The Golden Eagles shot just 30.8 percent in the game, while Drake hit 40.6 percent of its attempts. The Bulldogs outrebounded Marquette, 52-45. The 52 rebounds ranked as the ninth highest single-game total in Drake history.
Carla Bennett hit six of seven shots and finished with 13 points for Drake, while Haley Sames had 11 points. Lisa Oldenburg led Marquette with 16 points, while Abbie Willenborg added 11 points and nine rebounds.
