MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women?s basketball team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and improved to 2-0 in Conference USA with a 67-57 victory over Louisville in the Milwaukee Arena tonight. The Golden Eagles had five players in double figures, led by Kiesha Oliver?s season-high 17, but it was a crucial technical on Louisville?s Jenny Knight that sparked a 22-10 Marquette run to close the game. The Golden Eagles are now 10-3, 2-0. Louisville dropped to 8-5, 1-1.
With Louisville holding onto a tenuous 47-45 lead at the 8:22 mark, Knight, a Kenosha, Wis., native, was whistled for a reach-in foul on MU point guard Kristi Johnson. Knight then picked up a technical foul, which led to four Johnson free throws and Marquette?s biggest lead of the game (49-47). Ebony Williams hit two free throws off of the subsequent possession and the Golden Eagles never looked back.
?Those were big shots for KJ,? Marquette head coach Terri Mitchell said. ?That?s a difficult shot to make, with all eyes on her and she came through and knocked down four straight. Both teams were intense and heated up and that was a big turning point.?
Johnson wound up going 10-12 from the line and also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds to help Marquette to a 48-46 advantage on the boards. Freshman Kristin Seffern also grabbed a career-high eight boards, while Oliver Lisa Oldenburg, Abbie Willenborg and Ebony Williams pulled down six each. Heidi Bowman tallied 12 points, while both Oldenburg and Williams poured in 11, which was a career-high for Williams. Seffern and Williams were also both in the starting lineup, as Seffern replaced Willenborg, who is nursing a sore right ankle, and Williams replaced Oliver.
?Kiesha Oliver came off the bench as a sophomore and provided a big push for us and gave us some different options,? Mitchell said. ?At this point in the season, we?re looking for something to jump-start us at certain times and I asked her if she would fill that ?instant offense? role for us. We think it helps her get a better perspective on the game and allows us a little more flexibility off the bench. It seemed to work out tonight.?
Louisville was led by freshman Katie Smith?s 16 points. The Cardinals were without All-C-USA candidate Jill Morton, who missed her second straight game with a pulled quad muscle.
The Golden Eagles are back in C-USA action on Sun., Jan. 9, when they host American Division rival Cincinnati in the Milwaukee Arena at 2 p.m. (CT).
