Marquette Drops Tough Five-Game Decision To DePaul

Milwaukee -- In a match that took a little more than two hours and had over 400 total attack attempts, the Marquette volleyball team battled DePaul before coming out on the short end of an intense five-game decision, 15-5, 2-15, 17-15, 6-15, 12-15. The loss leaves the Golden Eagles' record at 5-17 overall and 3-7 in C-USA action. DePaul boosts its overall slate to 16-7 and league mark to 7-3.
DePaul finished the match with a 26.2 attack percentage compared to Marquette's mark of 18.0 percent. The Blue Demons posted an 85-73 edge in digs while MU enjoyed a 17-14 advantage in total blocks. The Golden Eagles also finished the contest with an 11-4 edge in service aces.
Marquette freshman Ann Lopata (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) chalked up a team-high 20 kills which also tied for match-high honors. Junior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) came through 17 kills and led all players with 10 total blocks. Freshman Megan Markowski (Glen, Ellyn, Ill.) and sophomore Annie Richey (Saint Louis, Mo.) finished with 13 and 11 kills, respectively, and also tied for team honors with 18 digs. Senior Liz Egasti (St. Charles, Ill.) doled out a season-high 63 assists.
Pacing DePaul's attack was sophomore Meg Griffin with 20 kills and a 45.7 attack percentage (20-4--35). Junior Stephanie Bishop notched 17 kills and led all players with 19 digs. Junior setter Kara Jakusz dished out 70 assists and 18 digs.
Marquette's next action takes place on Tuesday (Oct. 24) when it plays at Loyola starting at 7:00 p.m.
