MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's soccer team was the only squad to score in a match that was very equal, downing Marquette, 1-0. Memphis improved to 10-4 and 5-2 in C-USA action. The Golden Eagles, who have been ranked as high as seventh nationally earlier this season, fell to 9-5-2 on the season and 1-4-0 in C-USA with the loss.
The game was a defensive one, with each team's goalkeeper tallying five saves on the night, but Memphis outshot Marquette 11-8. Each team had a similar amount of chances with the Tigers having six shots on goal to MU's five.
"We are not going to dwell on this outcome," head coach Steve Adlard said. "It's frustrating not to score, but our game plan was solid and we seemed to execute it fine. We had some good chances, we just have to make the most of our opportunities."
After a scoreless first half, the game broke open in the 56th minute when Memphis defender Lars Thorstensen played a long pass from the Tiger defensive half through the Golden Eagles' defense to Sean Fraser, who broke through to score his 10th goal of the season and make the score 1-0.
With 34 minutes remaining, Marquette had chances to score the equalizer, but couldn't find the perfect opportunity. Junior Sean Reti (Brookfield, Wis.) and senior Marshall Morehead (Stillwater, Minn.) came off the bench in the second half offensively minded, but Marquette was unable to breakdown the Memphis defense.
Marquette returns home to host Saint Louis, ranked 14th in the nation, in an important Conference USA contest at Valley Fields at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24.
