Each week, senior thrower Lori Perrie will share her thoughts on the 2000 Golden Eagle Season. Here is this week's entry:
Last weekend the women's track and field team traveled to Purdue University in West Lafayette Indiana. For most of the team, this was their first outdoor meet, and I would have to say the team did pretty well.
The only first-place finish from the team came from sophomore hurdler Jeannette Batie, in the 400m hurdles. She ran a season-best time of 1:01.91. Bethany Harry took second in the 5000m race, battling a strong wind throughout. I took second in the hammer throw with a toss of 50.50m (166 feet). Third-place finishes came from Jessica Swan in the 3000m race and "Supersenior" Stephanie Goplin in the 800m.
We took almost the entire team to this meet to see what potential lies ahead. There were too many top eight places to mention, but I think most readers will get the idea of the depth of this team. From sprints to throws to distance races, we have individuals in each area capable of making a huge contribution.
The upcoming meet this weekend at Indiana State is a scored meet, so that should give a better indication of the depth of the team. I happen to think we are pretty strong and will do quite well at the Conference USA meet, especially since, this year, we have more events, such as the 400m hurdles, 10km race, hammer and discus, heptathalon and javelin.
Everyone seems to be practicing hard and focusing on their training (even though there are only six weeks of class left). I think it is especially hard for us seniors to maintain focus since we have more things on our minds, such as grad schools, jobs, and relocating. But we are dealing with it well and will be a force throughout the entire outdoor season!!
