Each week, senior thrower Lori Perrie will share her thoughts on the 2000 Golden Eagle Season. Here is this week's entry:
Two weeks ago a few members of the women's track team headed to the Drake Relays in Iowa. Jeannette Batie broke the school record in the 400m hurdles with a time of about 60.58 sec. and proceeded to strain a hamstring during the 4x200m relay. The rest of the relay members had no other competition that day because they were only entered in relays. I participated in the hammer and although I threw decently (53 meters), it took about 56 meters (NCAA qualifying) to make finals.
The rest of the women's team traveled to the Loras Invite, also in Iowa. From what I hear there was not much competition there and the team walked away with many firsts and top three finishes, but no school records.
This past weekend the team traveled to a meet in Madison, where, again, many top finishes were earned. FlaTria Horne took two firsts in the 100 and 200m sprints, I took first in the hammer and I believe Stephanie Goplin took first in the 800m (but don't quote me on that one). I was in one ring or another (hammer, discus or shot) for pretty much the entire time, so my focus was not really on the track.
We did get to see Suzy Favor-Hamilton, a Wisconsin alum, run the fastest time in THE WORLD, currently, in the 3000m run. It was very impressive to watch.
This weekend we are off to New Orleans for the Conference USA Outdoor Championships. The muggy weather we have been experiencing in Milwaukee the past couple of days is probably good for us because it will help us to acclimate to the extreme heat and humidity we will be forced to deal with at Tulane. Fortunately, the meet will begin mid- to late afternoon so we will not have to compete during the hottest time of the day.
We have several athletes seeded in the top eight in their individual events and are hoping for some upsets in others. The top eight finishes will get points for their team (10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1) and we'll take whatever we can get. Hopefully we will finish in the top four overall.
