Milwaukee -- After opening the C-USA portion of its schedule with a win at South Florida over the weekend, the Marquette men's soccer team takes a break from league play when it entertains Big Ten foe Northwestern on Tuesday (Sept. 12). Game time is 7:00 p.m. at the Valley Fields.
Marquette ran its record to 3-0 with a solid 4-1 win at South Florida on Saturday. The team's record represents the best start for a MU team since the 1993 campaign when that squad sprinted to a 5-0 record. In this week's Great Lakes Regional rankings, the Golden Eagles are tied with Akron for the No. 2 spot behind Indiana.
The Golden Eagles distributed their scoring attack in the South Florida match with four different players picking up goals. Senior Marshall Morehead (Stillwater, Minn.) recorded MU's first goal of the game, his fourth of the year, at 35:51 and that goal stood up into halftime. After USF tied the game, Marquette responded with three goals in a 24-minute span to blow the match wide open. Freshman Tony Walby (Brookfield, Wis.) scored in his third straight game, boosting his goal total to three on the year, while freshman Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kan.) and sophomore Eric Marshall (Waukesha, Wis.) accounted for the other goals.
Northwestern is looking for its first win of the season and enters the match against Marquette with an overall record of 0-4. In their most recent outing, the Wildcats dropped a 2-0 decision at home to Ohio State on Sunday.
Marquette posts a 14-4-1 all-time record against Northwestern and has won the last eight meetings against the Wildcats with NU's last win coming on Oct. 16, 1988, by a 3-0 margin. Last year, Marquette claimed a 3-0 win at Evanston with Marshall Morehead scoring a pair of goals to lead the attack.
