Milwaukee -- Hoping to record the best start by a Marquette soccer team since the 1993 season, the Golden Eagles host Cal Poly at Valley Fields Friday evening (Sept. 15) starting at 8:15. The game will follow the Marquette women's soccer game against C-USA foe Louisville that starts at 6:00 p.m.
Marquette ran its record to 4-0 with a tough 1-0 win at home over Northwestern on Tuesday (Sept. 12). The team's record represents the best start for MU since the 1993 campaign when that squad raced to a 5-0 record. In this week's Great Lakes Regional rankings, the Golden Eagles are tied with Akron for the No. 2 spot behind Indiana.
The Golden Eagles' accounted for the game's only goal at the 10:15 mark when freshman forward Derek Gutierrez's (Overland Park, Kan.) perfectly-aimed header from seven yards out off a corner kick from freshman Tony Walby (Brookfield) beat the Wildcat keeper. The goal was Gutierrez's second of the year. Freshman Adam Ubert (Hartland, Wis.) posted two saves en route to his second shutout of the year. Ubert takes a goals-against average of 0.50 into the Cal Poly contest.
Cal Poly posts a 2-2 overall record and is looking to rebound following a pair of losses at the Diadora Classic at San Franciso last weekend. Junior forward Johnny Cummins is the team's top scorer with eight points on three goals and two assists. Sophomore forward Cory Pasck has also produced three goals for six points.
Friday's match marks the first-ever meeting between Marquette and Cal Poly.
