Milwaukee -- The Marquette University men's soccer team looks to remain unbeaten tomorrow evening (Sept. 19) when it hosts Oakland University. Game time at Valley Fields is 7:00 p.m.
Head Coach Steve Adlard and his squad stand 4-0-1 after five games and are coming off a 3-3 overtime draw against Cal Poly last Friday (Sept. 15). The team's record represents the best five-game start by a Marquette team since the 1993 season (5-0). The Golden Eagles hold down the No. 2 position (46 pts.) in this week's Great Lakes Region Poll, just behind Indiana (49 pts.), while Oakland is No. 7. Nationally, Marquette has received its first ranking of the year. The Golden Eagles enter the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll in 18th position.
Senior Marshall Morehead (Stillwater, Minn.) accounted two of MU's goals against Cal Poly, his fifth and sixth markers of the year, while freshman Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kan.) contributed the other score, his third of the campaign. Freshman goalie Adam Ubert (Hartland, Wis.) finished the match with five saves. Morehead continues to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring with 13 points (6-1) while freshman midfielder Tony Walby (Brookfield, Wis.) holds down the No. 2 position with 10 points (3-4).
Oakland comes to town with a record of 2-1-1. The Grizzlies suffered their first setback of the season on Saturday (Sept. 16) when they dropped a 2-1 home decision to Dayton. OU's top scorer is freshman forward Anders Vollen who has tallied six points on three goals. Junior Mike Skolnik has been solid in goal and shows a goals-against mark of 0.92 while coming up with 20 saves.
Following the contest against Oakland, Marquette takes to the road to participate in the Ameritas Classic in Omaha, Neb., Sept. 22-24. On Friday, MU tangles with Drake (5:00 p.m.) before meeting Creighton on Sunday (2:30 p.m.), the No. 1-ranked team in this week's Midwest Region and the nation's No. 10-ranked team in the Sept. 11 poll.
