Milwaukee -- The Marquette University volleyball team opens the C-USA portion of its schedule on Tuesday evening (Sept. 19) when it plays at DePaul University. The match will be played at the Athletic Center on the DePaul campus and start time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
Head Coach Laura Farina and her Golden Eagles enter the DePaul bout with an overall record of 1-10. The Golden Eagles participated in the Hoosier II Invitational last weekend and went winless, coming out on the short end of three matches. MU lost its opening-round match to Duke (5-15, 13-15, 5-15) before dropping contests to host Indiana (7-15, 5-15, 8-15) and Loyola Marymount (11-15, 8-15, 13-15).
Junior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) and freshman Ann Lopata (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) recorded double-figure kills in all three matches with Devine finishing with 39 successful attacks over the weekend and Lopata with 37. Lopata ranks as the team's leader in total kills (158), kills per game (3.95 kpg) and attack percentage (.232). Devine stands second on the squad in kills (148) and attack percentage (.222) while registering a team-high 37 total blocks. As a team, MU is hitting 17.5 percent while its opponents are hitting 27.2 percent.
DePaul, coached by Dawn Dockstader, hosts MU with an overall record of 9-3 and claimed championships honors at the Blue Demon Invitational last weekend, defeating Providence, Valparaiso, Central Michigan and Alabama. Junior outside hitter Stephanie Bishop is tops on the team and No. 6 in C-USA is kills per game (4.52 kpg) while sophomore outside hitter Meg Griffin is hitting a team-best 31.9 percent (105-23--257), good for the No. 4 spot among C-USA players.
NOTES -- Lopata's 42.3 hitting percentage (14-3--26) vs. Indiana represented the highest effort by a Marquette player this season ... Freshman Megan Markowski's 16 kills in the Loyola Marymount contest were the most by a Golden Eagle for a three-game match this year ... Lopata is No. 8 in C-USA in kills per game (3.95 kpg) ... Freshman Gemma Greer is tied for fifth in the league in aces per game (0.47) and seventh in assists per game (10.97).
