Milwaukee - Marquette needed just 46 seconds more than the regulation 90 minutes as the 18th-ranked Golden Eagles (5-0-1) defeated Oakland (2-2-1), 2-1, in men's college soccer on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
The game-winning goal by senior midfielder Mike Adrian (St. Louis, Mo./SLU High) just 46 seconds into overtime gave Marquette the victory. After regulation ended tied at 1-1, Adrian put a right foot to a cross from junior midfielder Sean Reti (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) into a vacant right side of the net for the victory.
"It is a shame that we couldn't finish in regulation," said head coach Steve Adlard. "That being said, the final goal was textbook soccer. It was exactly what we were trying to do."
Adlard said the Marquette plan of attack was to feed the ball wide to Reti and cross the ball into the front of the goal mouth.
"I talked with (Reti) about getting wide right before the overtime and he did it, and we got the proper result," Adlard added.
Oakland benefitted from a heavy wind in the early moments of the first half. The Golden Grizzlies took the lead in the match's 12th minute as Anders Vollen placed a 14-yard shot past Marquette keeper Adam Ubert (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) for his fourth goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles scored the equalizing goal amidst a downpour in the 67th minute. Sophomore J.W. Simpson (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) scored his first of the season, blasting a rebound from a shot attempt by sophomore back Mike Robards (Leawood, Kan./Rockhurst).
Marquette continues its season on Friday, Sept. 22 in Omaha, Neb. The Golden Eagles take on Drake. After a day of rest, Marquette meets third-ranked Creighton in Omaha on Sept. 24.
