Marquette Volleyball Defeats Southern Miss On The Road

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball closed out a weekend road trip on a positive note Saturday evening by winning at Southern Miss in four games. The Golden Eagles raised their overall record to 12-8 (5-4 C-USA) with a 32-30, 30-20, 20-30, 30-24 decision over USM which dropped to 7-13 overall, 2-8 in the league.
Leading a balanced Marquette attack was senior Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.) with a team-high 23 kills along with 15 digs. Grbavac, who finished the match with a team-best 32.0 attack percentage (23-7--50), also dished out a pair of service aces. Freshman Jennifer Amobi (Silver Springs, Mary.) totaled 16 kills while senior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) and freshman Shannon Devine (Harris, Minn.) recorded 15 and 10 kills, respectively.
For the match, Marquette hit 26.0 percent (71-24--181) compared to 23.3 percent (63-21--180) by Southern Miss. USM finished with a slim 78-76 advantage in digs and a 9-8 advantage in total blocks. In the fourth and deciding game of the match, Marquette registered a 34.9 attack percentage (19-4--43) vs. USM's effort of 22.2 percent (16-6--45).
Marquette kicks off a three-match home stand on Tuesday, Oct. 23, when it hosts Loyola at the MU Gym starting at 7:00 p.m.
