LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Marquette men's soccer team defeated Louisville, 3-0 in men's soccer. Marquette improves to 5-3-1 overall and raises its C-USA record to 2-1. Louisville is now 3-5-1.
The Golden Eagles scored almost before Louisville knew what hit them. Marquette went up 1-0 in the match's third minute. Junior defender Mike Robards (Leawood, Kan.) scored on a blast from 35 yards. Sophomore forward Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kan.) recorded the assist.
"He just belted it," head coach Steve Adlard said. "He got on top of it and really put a foot into it. It was a great goal."
Marquette's offense seemed to be at its peak early in the contest. The Golden Eagles netted their second goal just one second before the conclusion of the 12th minute. Gutierrez scored on a header from a cross from junior forward Eric Marshall (Waukesha, Wis.) to take a 2-0 lead.
Junior forward Jeff Gerlesits (Wheaton, Ill.) made it 3-0, scoring his third goal of the season. Gerlesits pounded home a rebound after a shot from Robards.
Marquette had even more offensive opportunities, according to Adlard. The Golden Eagles had a pair of additional opportunities which went wide and had two more which were saved by the Louisville goalkeeper. Louisville had an a pair of late opportunities to score, but failed. Louisville midfielder Nathan Stevens had a penalty kick but hit the cross bar. Forward Brad Divilbiss attempted a last second shot in the 89th minute but his shot went wide and the Cardinals fell 3-0.
"We started very strong tonight. We had a score to settle after they beat us last year," Adlard said. "It was a very well played game on our part. We played aggressively on defense and turned that into aggressive offense. We were intent on taking shots to create pressure and then take more shots."
Marquette continues its season on Thursday, Oct. 11 against East Carolina at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields.
