TAMPA, Fla. - Led by Jeff Thwaites' lone goal of the match, South Florida (14-4, 7-2) defeated Marquette (9-7-1, 4-5) 1-0.
In a tight first half, both teams battled to a 0-0 tie, with the Bulls taking a 7-4 shot advantage into the break. 22 whistles for fouls in the period made things difficult for both teams to establish any rhythm.
Each team had its opportunities with corner kicks in the half, as a total of eight were tallied, four on each side.
Aaron Ortega set up the game winner for USF, as he was fouled just inside the 18 yard box at the 85:50 mark by senior forward Sean Reti. Thwaites scored on his fourth penalty kick of the season, as he got Adam Ubert, Marquette's keeper, to lean in one direction while he drove the ball past him to the short side into the back of the net. For Thwaites, it was his second game-winning goal on this season.
With four saves on the night, Perkins received the win, and improved his record to 13-4 on the season. Ubert tallied five saves on the night and had a team save preserve the 0-0 tie around the 70th minute. With the loss Ubert's record dropped to 9-7-1.
The Golden Eagles had several opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on the elusive goal.
"We played very well, there's no doubt in that," head coach Steve Adlard said. "There were times that we played very crisp. Our last two outings showed that we are a very good team, we just haven't been able to come away with the result."
Marquette returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. against Cincinnati. This is the final match of the regular season for the Golden Eagles.
