ROCHESTER, Mich. - Men's Soccer Falls to Oakland, 1-0 Golden Eagles' defense holds OU to two shots, but gives up only goal
ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The Oakland University men's soccer team defeated Marquette, 1-0, at the OU Soccer Field. Oakland opens the season at 1-0, while Marquette drops to 0-1 on the season.
The match's only goal came in the 30th minute of the first half as freshman Ryan Rzepka scored on an Anders Vollen corner kick to give the Golden Grizzlies a 1-0 lead. Despite the Golden Eagles' 11 shots, OU was able to keep Marquette at bay and win the season opener, 1-0.
"It was a situation where we outplayed them all match, but it just wasn't our day," said Marquette head coach Steve Adlard. "It's frustrating, but it is the season opener and I think our play is at the place it should be at this point in the year."
Adlard said he was particularly pleased with the play of junior defender Tom Nolan. Nolan led an MU defense that held the Golden Grizzlies to just two shots. Marquette did have opportunities in the second half to record the equalizer. Several of MU's 11 shots for the match were launched in the final 20 minutes of the match and just missed.
The contest proved to be a very physical battle with 37 total fouls called and one yellow card issued.
"I was very pleased with the way our guys played," said Oakland head coach Gary Parsons. "I was glad to see we were disciplined for being such a young team."
Marquette returns to action on Labor Day with a 1:30 kickoff against DePaul at Valley Fields.
