MILWAUKEE - Four first half goals, with the first two coming from freshman Chris Lee (Lenexa, Kan.) helped Marquette to a 4-0 win over Valparaiso at Valley Fields. With the win, head coach Steve Adlard won his 100th career match at Marquette. The Golden Eagles improved to 2-1 with the win, while Valpo fell to 1-2.
Lee scored at 7:39 on a 12 yard blast after receiving a long header from junior midfielder Mike Robards (Leawood, Kan.) In the 19th minute, sophomore forward Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kan.) missed on a shot after a pass from sophomore midfielder Zach McCallum (Madison, Wis.), but Lee was nearby to head home the loose ball. With the pair of goals, Lee brings his season-leading total up to three.
"That first goal was a thing of beauty," Adlard said. "It was a crisp pass to a perfect run. You can't expect to do it much better than that."
Marquette added a goal in the 36th minute by junior forward Sean Reti (Brookfield, Wis.) who settled a ball and outmaneuvered a defender to score on a 19 yard rocket. Just over five minutes later, junior defender Tom Nolan (Palatine, Ill.) floated a header into the goal for MU's fourth score.
In the second half, the play belonged to Marquette, but Valparaiso had several scoring chances. Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Ubert (Hartland, Wis.) made five of his eight saves in the second half.
"It may be a blessing in disguise, but they were able to show how vulnerable we were to this type of play," Adlard added. "Once they got a sniff of the goal, they offered some good chances at us."
Marquette returns to action on Friday, Sept. 14. The Golden Eagles take on UAB in Birmingham, Ala., at 7 p.m.
