Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team earned its first Conference USA win of the season Saturday evening, defeating UAB in three games, 30-27, 30-24, 30-18. The win evened Marquette's overall record at 6-6 (1-2 C-USA) and ended a four-match losing streak. UAB falls to 6-6 overall, 0-4 in the league.
The Golden Eagles registered a 27.4 attack percentage (53-19--124) while holding the UAB to 11.2 percent (33-20--116). Marquette finished with a 55-43 edge in digs along an 8-4 advantage in service aces.
Senior Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.) led all players with 14 kills and totaled 12 digs. Senior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) chalked up 12 kills and seven digs while junior Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee, Wis.) played a strong overall match with nine kills, a 38.9 attack percentage (9-2--18) and a match-best 13 digs.
Marquette's next action is a non-conference tilt at Illinois-at-Chicago on Wednesday (Oct. 3). The Golden Eagles return to C-USA play next weekend (Oct. 5-6) when they host East Carolina and Charlotte at the MU Gym.
