Men's Soccer to Host TCU

Marquette returns home for the first time since Sept. 11. The Golden Eagles were on a four-game road trip in which they went 1-3. MU is 1-4 on the road this year. The Golden Eagles host TCU at Valley Fields on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. Marquette is 1-1 at Valley Fields this season.
Marquette played in one of the premier tournaments this past weekend, playing in the Nike Husky Invitational. Marquette fought valliantly against Washington, a nationally ranked team in the preseason, before falling 3-2. MU played Portland, the nation's 11th ranked team, two days later and fell, 3-0. MU struggled against the Pilots after sustaining three injuries during the contest.
Scouting TCU
The TCU men's soccer team dropped a match to College of Charleston 3-0 on Sunday in the final match of the 2002 TCU/United American/Adidas Men's Soccer Classic.The Frogs beat C-USA foe Cincinnati on Friday 1-0, pushing their record to 1-1 in conference play. After Sunday's match against Charleston, the Frogs stand at 2-8 overall.
The Horned Frogs picked up a big win in Conference USA play, downing Cincinnati. Freshman forward Chris Carman scored for the Frogs late in the first half. He has XX goals on the season. TCU goalkeeper Michael Lahoud who recorded eight saves. The Frogs have one of the more interesting players in the nation. Senior midfielder Nick Browne is also a member of the TCU football team, serving as placekicker. Browne will likely not play against Marquette as the TCU football team hosts Houston on the same day.
Slow Week
For the second time this season, Marquette has just one match during a Monday-Sunday time frame. The Golden Eagles played Wright State on Sept. 11. They played the previous Saturday and did not play again until the following Wednesday. That was MU's last victory.
The Golden Eagles also started the season later than most. MU played its first mathc on Sept. 4. Matches were allowed to be played on Aug. 30. The Golden Eagles, however, have a busy October, catching up with amount of matches they can play. MU has eight games in October and three in six days in November.
In The Polls
Marquette is not regionally ranked at this point in the season. The Golden Eagles were ranked sixth in the September 9 poll, but have remained out since the September 16 poll. Indiana, Notre Dame, Evansville, Wis.-Milwaukee and Detroit round out the regional top five.
MU Returns to Conference Play
The Golden Eagles have eight matches in October with six of those coming against Conference USA opponents. Currently, Marquette is 1-1 in Conference USA matches and have not lost at home in C-USA play
Golden Eagles Get Big Win
Marquette's 1-0 win over Saint Louis marked the first time MU beat the Bills since 1995. MU's record against Saint Louis is now 3-19. The win is also the first against a ranked team this season. MU will also play ranked foe Wisconsin this season.
Gutierrez on Pace
Junior forward Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kan.) scored his fourth goal of the season - a penalty kick against Washington. Gutierrez scored five goals a season ago. With 13 matches left, he is on pace to score 10 goals this year. The last time a Marquette player scored 10 or more goals was in 1999 when Marshall Morehead scored 13 goals.
Goal Explosion
Marquette's offense came to life against Wright State. The Golden Eagles scored four goals against the Raiders, marking the only time this year that MU has scored more than once. Last season, the Golden Eagles scored four or more on four different occasions, with the last being a 4-1 win in the C-USA semifinals against 24th ranked UAB.
Injury Report
Three players missed time against Portland, in a 3-0 loss to the Pilots. Senior midfielder Bryan Godfrey (Newburgh, Ind.) suffered a separated shoulder against the Pilots. Sophomore forward Chris Lee (Lenexa, Kan.) missed most of the match against Portland, suffering from a variety of ailments. Senior defender Theran Motl (Middleton, Wis.) was unavailable in the second half due to a hip injury.
One Was Enough
Senior midfielder Mike Robards (Leawood, Kan.) scored Marquette's only goal in a 1-0 shutout of Saint Louis on Sept. 9. It was the 13th 1-0 win in the last five seasons for the Golden Eagles.
Gutierrez Set for a Full Season
Junior forward Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kan.) missed seven games last season down the stretch. Upon his return to the final four matches, Gutierrez was a dangerous offensive threat with two goals and two assists. Despite missing one third of the season, Gutierrez led the team in assists with six and had five goals on the year. Had he played a full season, Gutierrez averages calculate to as a 7.5 goal, 9.0 assist season. Currently, Gutierrez has a team leading three goals and seven points.
