MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men's soccer team (5-6, 3-2 C-USA) got off to quick start and played solid defense to defeat Louisville (2-10-2, 0-3-1 C-USA) 2-0 in a Conference USA men's soccer contest.
MU got on the board in the third minute. Senior forward Eric Marshall (Brookfield, Wis.) took the ball down the far touch line and fed a ball to the corner toward midfielder Mike Robards (Leawood, Kan.) who played it to the center of the net. Junior forward Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kan.) took the perfect cross and one-timed it from 10 yards out to put MU up 1-0.
In similar fashion in the sixth minute, Marshall this time went to the near touch line and played to the corner for junior forward Matt Darby (Leawood, Kan.). Darby played it eight yards in front of the net, where junior midfielder Tony Walby (Brookfield, Wis.) headed home for the quick 2-0 lead.
"I thought we scored two great goals early," head coach Steve Adlard said. "After that, we woke up to the fact that we were in a tough game."
Despite the two early goals, the match was fairly evenly contested. MU held an 11-10 advantage in shots. Both teams had four shots on goal, however, two of MU's were goals. Junior goalkeeper Adam Ubert (Hartland, Wis.) made two key saves late in the match to preserve the shutout, his second of the season.
"(Adam Ubert) came up big with two saves," Adlard said. "Without those saves, I don't know how this game might have ended. Maybe 3-2 in their favor because they have the momentum. But we defended very solidly and that's a positive point."
Marquette returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 with a home contest against Charlotte at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields.
