Milwaukee- The Marquette women's basketball team beat the Wisconsin AAU Vikings exhibition team 74-71 in the final exhibition game. Sophomore Katie Alsdurf led the way for the Golden Eagles with 22 points, six of which came from behind the arc. Senior Rachel Klug netted 20 points and had four steals.
The Vikings kept the score close throughout the game. Marquette led by only one point at halftime as the score was 33-32 and then didn't lead again until 1:25 remaining in the second half. The Vikings had a shot-percentage of 46.9 percent in the second half of play.
Two former Golden Eagles were on the AAU team -- Kiesha Oliver and Lisa Oldenburg graduated in 2000. During their time at Marquette they led the team to four NCAA tournament appearances. Oldenburg had 17 points and five rebounds while Oliver contributed three points and three steals.
Marquette coach Terri Mitchell said that she saw some things she liked from her team playing in such a close game.
"An exhibition game is a time to work things out. It's important for me to see that we could take care of the ball and hit critical free throws."
The regular season starts for the Golden Eagles on Sunday, November 24 as they play at Dayton at 3:30 EST. They then play two games at home -- November 26th verses the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 6:00 p.m. and then November 30th against St. Francis (Pa.) at 2:00 p.m.
