Dave Uhrich, the head coach of Marquette University's men's and women's Cross Country and Track and Field teams, has announced that the following athletes will attend Marquette in the fall and compete for the Golden Eagles.
Women's Recruits
Tara Hinke (Fond du Lac, Wis./ Goodrich) - Hinke was the Wisconsin Division I state cross country champion in 2001. She also place third in the 1,600 meters at the 2001 and 2002 state track meets and was third in the 3,200 meters at the 2001 State track meet. Her personal best times are 5:02 in the 1,600 meters and 11:07 in the 3,200 meters.
Uhrich on Hinke: "Tara ran an outstanding race at the 2001 state cross country meet, taking first place in an extremely talented field of runners. She is excited about running in college and I think her best years of running are ahead of her. Even though she is coming into a nationally- ranked cross country program, she is capable of being one of the top runners on the team in her freshman year. She can have an immediate impact in the conference in both cross country and track."
Marianne Junck (Madison, Wis./Edgewood) - Junck took third place in the 300 meter hurdles at the 2001 Wisconsin Division II state track meet. She took three second place finishes in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 400 meters at the 2002 state track meet, leading her team to the state title. Her personal best times are 57.8 in the 400, 14.6 in the 100 hurdles and 44.7 in the 300 hurdles.
Uhrich on Junck: "Marianne is an outstanding athlete and a tremendous addition to our team. Her best event in college may be the 400 hurdles, but because of her speed and athleticism, she may turn into an outstanding heptathlete as well. We plan to try her in several events to see which direction we would like to go with her, but whatever direction we go, she is capable of making an immediate impact in Conference USA."
Allison Sauer (Goshen, Ky./South Oldham) Sauer was a four time state champion in Kentucky, with first place finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter at the 1999 state track meet, the 1999 state cross country meet and in the 3,200 at the 2001 state track meet. Her personal best times are 5:02 in the 1,600 and 10:56 in the 3,200.
Uhrich on Sauer: "Allison had a tremendous amount of success throughout her high school career in Kentucky and she is looking forward to coming to Marquette and continuing that success. She has a great attitude towards running and will be looking to make the varsity during her freshmen year and progressing from there."
Men's recruits
Brent Des Roches (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont) - Des Roches took third place at the 2001 Ohio State Cross Country meet with a 15:20 and took fourth place at the 2002 State track meet in the 3,200 meters. He was also 18th place at the 2001 Footlocker Midwest regional cross country championships. His personal best time in the 3,200 meters is 9:05.
Uhrich on Des Roches: "Brent has had an outstanding high school career and his 9:05 in the 3,200 meters is the fastest high school recruit at Marquette since four time All-American Keith Hanson in 1982. Brent has an outstanding work-ethic and has the ability to come in as a freshman and not only be one of the top runners on the team but also in the conference."
David Henderson (Auckland, New Zealand/Kings College) - Henderson finished in sixth place at the Australian All-Schools cross country nationals. His personal best times are 1:54 in the 800 and 4:00 in the 1,500 meters.
Uhrich on Henderson: "David has a lot of untapped potential. In high school he played a lot of sports, including playing rugby during the cross country season. He is excited about putting all of his energies just into running and is already training harder during this summer than he ever has in his life. He will be fighting for a varsity spot on the cross country team and will be looking to place as a freshman in the middle distance events at the Conference USA Championships."
Tommy Schmitz (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) - Schmitz placed in three events at the Wisconsin Division II state track meet, placing fourth in both the 1,600 and 800 and eighth in the 3,200. His personal best times are 1:56 in the 800 and 4:19 in the 1,600.
Uhrich on Schmitz: "Tommy had a good high school running career going into his senior year of track, but it was this last season that really showed his ability to run at the NCAA Division I level. Tommy is very motivated to be successful in college and I believe his best years are ahead of him. He will be battling for a varsity spot on the cross country team and looking to make an immediate impact in the middle-distance events during his first track season."
Jon Shaffer (Shorewood, Wis./Marquette University High School) - Shaffer was third in the 300 hurdles at the 2000 and 2001 Wisconsin Division I state track meet. He was also a member of relay teams that placed in the state meet. His personal best time is 38.8 in the 300 hurdles.
Uhrich on Shaffer: "Jon will be a great addition to our team and I feel confident that he will be able to make the transition from the high school 300 hurdles to the college 400 hurdles during his freshmen year. He is capable of placing in the Conference USA championships in the 400 hurdles as a freshman and he will also give us depth in the relay events."
