DeKALB, Ill. -- Second half goals by junior Eric Marshall and junior John Hawkins -- both in the final five minutes of play -- earned Marquette a 2-2 exhibition tie with Northern Illinois.
Northern Illinois took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half as Peter Agrimson sent a free kick from the midfield stripe into the penalty area. Brendon Partish beat a Marquette defender to the ball for a short header past Adam Ubert into the net.
Agrimson padded the margin in the 75th minute with a penalty kick conversion. Jon Davit sent Bernhard Hagevik on a breakaway, forcing Ubert to pull the Huskie forward to the ground. Agrimson netted the ensuing PK, seemingly sending NIU on to victory, but the visitors rallied in the closing moments.
Marshall beat NIU defender Rasih Pala to a crossing pass for a short header into the corner of the net with just 3:39 remaining to trim the deficit to 2-1. Hawkins worked free for a nearly identical goal to tie the match with only 54 seconds remaining on the clock.
Marquette opens the regular season on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at Evansville for a 7 p.m. match.
