Cincinnati Upends Men's Soccer, 2-1 Bearcats score twice in second half for win
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati came back with two goals from Scott Lyons in the second half to defeat Marquette, 2-1, in Conference USA men's soccer action. Marquette falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in C-USA. while Cincinnati improves to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in C-USA play.
Marquette lost a one-goal first half lead and had chances near the end, but MU was unable to score the equalizer.
"They tried to defend their lead by playing back," head coach Steve Adlard said. "That didn't help their case any, but we weren't able to do anything with that advantage."
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead when junior forward Derek Gutierrez's (Overland Park, Kan.) shot deflected off Bearcat defender Anders Cedergren and over goalkeeper Sacha Nathu.
Lyons tied the match in the 34th minute with the first of his two goals on the day. Lyons was assisted by Justin Dobbs.
Lyons notched his second goal in the 52nd minute when he gathered the rebound from Matt Hayden and placed the ball in the back of the net. Hayden was credited with an assist on the play.
"Lyons played an inspired match," Cincinnati head coach Hilton Dayes said. "Not only did he score two goals, but he did a great job of winning balls in midfield."
Cincinnati received a scare late in the game when Marquette had a shot hit off the left crossbar.
"We had the best of the play in terms off territory and chances," head coach Steve Adlard said. "We hit the post late in the game, but we didn't come up with the loose ball in the box in the second half. They went after those balls harder than we did, and we weren't able to get chances at the net."
Marquette returns to action on Friday, Sept. 27 in the Nike Husky Classic in Seattle against Washington. Time of that match is 7 p.m. PDT. MU concludes that tournament against Portland on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 11:30 a.m. PDT.
