WAUWATOSA, Wis. - The Marquette women's basketball team put an end to their two game losing streak with a convincing 62-41 victory over Conference USA rival South Florida at the Wisconsin Lutheran Field House Friday night. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA.
The Golden Eagles were in full control of the game as they quickly got out to a nine point lead as they opened the game on a 11-2 run. Marquette's lead ballooned to as much as 27 points late in the third quarter and never trailed in the game.
"I think it (the run) was important because it gave us confidence earky," said freshman Carolyn Kieger. "Especially after last game, we had something to prove after the DePaul loss."
Sophomore Katie Alsdurf led the way for Marquette with 15 points. Kieger dropped 13 points along with team high seven rebounds and seven assists.
"Carolyn has been doing it all year for us, it is just another solid, all around game for her," said Alsdurf.
Marquette's defense was the key to the victory as it held South Florida to just 19 first half points, a season low for a Marquette opponent. The Bulls' 41 points was also a season low for a Marquette opponent.
The Golden Eagles also forced a season high 30 turnovers and recorded a season high 19 steals, Alsdurf led the way with six. South Florida's turnovers led to 34 Golden Eagle points.
Marquette will conclude its four game home stand Sunday with a game against UAB at the Bradley Center. The game will tip off at noon and will be broadcast on C-USA TV.
