MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis freshman Tamika Butler hit two three pointers during an 18-3 second-half as Memphis defeated Marquette, 71-60. Memphis pick captured its first Conference USA win of the season, ending Marquette's six-game road win streak.
Junior Princess Swilley had a game-high 19 points for the Lady Tigers (8-9, 1-3 C-USA) and senior Shannon Hamp added 15. Hamp converted a three-point play with the Lady Tigers trailing the Golden Eagles (9-8, 1-3 C-USA) 48-41 with 10:28 remaining in the second half. Hamp's basket and free throw sparked the team's huge run in the second half and Butler buried a three-pointer from the left-wing to give Memphis its first lead of the second half at the 8:35 mark. Memphis held on for the victory.
Marquette lost the lead at the 7:54 mark. The Golden Eagles had led by as many as seven after a jumper by senior Rachel Klug, who scored all of her 14 points in the second half after playing just 11 minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.
"This is a tough place to play," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "We tried to prepare for the situation we would be in. We had to play catch up in the second half. We got the shots, but we weren't able to get them to fall."
The first half was characterized by a series of runs by both teams. Marquette opened the contest on a 9-2 run only to see Memphis grab its first lead of the game at the 6:21 on a jumper by Stephanie Stoglin. The Lady Tigers took their second six-point lead of the half on another jumper by Stoglin at the 2:54 mark, but that would be the last points of the half as Marquette closed with a 7-0 run to take a one-point lead into the break.
Marquette stayed ahead most of the game with excellent shooting from the free throw line. The Golden Eagles made their first 17 attempts and finished with a 25-for-28 effort from the line for 89.3 percent. The free throws offset a poor shooting game as MU made 32.1 percent of its shots. MU went to the line so many times in part to 23 fouls on Memphis. Marquette was called for 25, sending the Lady Tigers to the line 30 times.
Katie Alsdurf led Marquette with 17 points on 5-of-18 shooting from the field. Alsdurf's first three-pointer was the only one the visitors would make as they shot just 1-of-12 from behind the arc.
"We didn't knock down the shots we needed to," Mitchell said. "We needed an inside presence. With Rachel on the bench with foul trouble, they were able to extend their defense out on the guards and play tighter."
Hamp had a team-high seven rebounds as the Lady Tigers were outrebounded 45-34 by Marquette. Marquette guard Kelly Schwerman had a game-high nine rebounds.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, Jan. 26, at Saint Louis at 2 p.m.
