MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's team had two players advance to the round of 16 while then men's team had one first round victor in the first day of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on the Marquette campus.
Michelle Mojzis advanced with a win over Nicky Koopman of Robert Morris, 6-1, 6-0. She will play fifth seeded Caitlin Burke of Cedarburg High School in the round of 16. Vero Garcia-Briseno defeated Duquesne's Diana Stein, 6-3, 6-2. She will meet second seed Catherine Lynch of California in the second round.
Two MU women lost in the first round and will play in tomorrow's consolation rounds. Alex Stankovic suffered a loss to top seed Raquel Kops-Jones of California, 6-1, 6-3. Eva Trujillo-Herrera lost to Sarah Foster, 7-6, 6-1, in the first round.
The men's side struggled in the first day. All Marquette men were eliminated by the end of the day. Only one advanced past the first round. Eigintas Vedrickas defeated Andrew Olswing of Memphis, 6-4, 6-2. He advanced to the second round, but lost to Ian Bliss of West Virginia, 7-6, 7-6. Creighton Macy, Kent Davies, Ricky Servoss, Ian Kawas and Matt Mueller each lost in the round of 64 and the round of 32 consolation.
