MILWAUKEE - Trailing 2-1 at the half, the Marquette men's soccer team (6-6-1) had plenty of time to come back on Wisconsin (8-7). However, the Badgers' defense held MU's potent offense in check, thanks to the Golden Eagles playing the bulk of the match a man down, and Wisconsin came away with a 2-1 win at McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison.
Wisconsin jumped on Marquette early, scoring in the seventh minute. Phil Doeh scored his second goal of the season in the seventh minute, putting the Badgers up early.
The Badgers increased their lead to 2-0 less than five minute later. Matthew Jelacic recorded his first goal of the season. Nick Van Sicklen recorded the assist.
The match was characterized by physical play. Combined, the teams were called for 28 fouls. Six cards were issued during the match, including a pair of red cards to Marquette. The Golden Eagles played a man down from the 23rd minute when junior Danny Mullin was issued a red card. MU played the final 47 seconds down two men when Bryan Dahlquist was given a red card.
The Golden Eagles jumped back in the match in the 34th minute, despite playing 10-on-11. Freshman Matt Blouin scored for the third time this season. Senior Brian Schnell was awarded the assist on the play.
Marquette peppered Wisconsin goalkeeper Eric Hanson with 12 shots in the first half. Hanson made five stops, all in the first half. The UW defense kept short-handed Marquette from getting much of a chance scoring the equalizing goal, allowing just two MU shots in the final 45 minutes.
The Golden Eagles next play on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields against East Carolina.
