MILWAUKEE - Marquette junior forward Chris Lee scored three goals, increasing his team-leading total to 10, as the Golden Eagles (7-6-1, 4-1-1 C-USA) easily put away East Carolina (3-6-2, 0-5-1 C-USA), 5-0 at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles started the goal scoring barrage early. Just 37 seconds into the contest, freshman Matt Blouin scored on the first shot of the match. He hit a six yard shot that came in on a cross from senior midfielder Matt Darby. ECU defender David Rowe missed an opportunity to clear and Blouin scored. Senior forward Derek Gutierrez also recorded an assist.
"It was nice to actually put the game beyond the nervous stage early," head coach Steve Adlard said. "We did it early enough that everyone could relace and establish themselves with a confidence and style of play that we expect."
In the 32nd minute, Lee scored the first of his three consecutive. His 12 yard blast was sent below the left arm of East Carolina goalkeeper Brian Pope. Senior defender Zach McCallum fed a ball to Gutierrez who crossed to Lee's foot.
In the 52nd minute, Lee hit a 15 yard shot past Pope after McCallum led him from the left side. McCallum forced a turnover in the defensive end before the long approach. Lee scored his third of the night six minutes later. Darby had a throw in deep in the Marquette end to Gutierrez who flicked to Lee.
"Blouin set the tone and standard for the evening. They found it hard to mark him," Adlard added. "That made Lee very free to use his speed and ability. He really had the opportunity to score three more.
Sophomore forward Blair Kohlmeyer added an insurance goal in the 67th minute.
Marquette owned most of the opportunities all night, having 16 shots, 11 on goal. MU held East Carolina to just four shots.
"It was a good, solid performance from back to front," Aldard said. "The effectiveness of the team defense created some great opportunities for the offense.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, October 22 when they play at Louisville at 7 p.m. (EDT).
