Milwaukee-Hugo Leenders, Creighton Macy and Eigis Vedrickas are the three Marquette men's tennis players who will be competing in this week's ITA Region IV Midwest Championships, hosted by Michigan State. Play begins October 23, and finishes on October 28.
Coach Steve Rodecap says this tournament is an opportunity for his players to do well in a competitive field. "We, as a team, are still trying to instill the attitude that we are on mission and trying to prove something every time we step on the court," Rodecap said. "This tournament provide a good opportunity for us to do this."
The field of competitors includes every school in the Big Ten except for Penn State, and other schools such as Notre Dame, Louisville, and DePaul. The finalists in singles and the doubles winners all advance to the ITA National Indoors Tournament later in the season.
Rodecap says he expects the three players to do well this week. "Hugo (Leenders) finished his last tournament very strong and was playing at a pretty high level and I think he will continue to get better," Rodecap said. "Creighton Macy is playing some of his best tennis ever, and I expect to see the real Eigintas (Vedrickas) come to play."
